Courteney Cox Splits From Johnny McDaid After 10 Yrs Together, First Broke Up During Couples Therapy

Courteney Cox is currently going through one of the most difficult phases of her life. For those unaware, the Friends star was in a long-term relationship with Johnny McDaid, whom you might recognise from Snow Patrol. However, according to reports, the duo have decided to part ways after 10 years together. 

Courteney Cox and Johnny McDaid continue to have an “amicable” relationship amid their split

Courteney Cox, 62, and her musician boyfriend, Johnny McDaid, 49, have officially broken up after a decades-long relationship. Although the news was revealed recently, online reports suggest that the pair called it quits late last year, in 2026. Friends of the former couple revealed that their breakup was not “ugly” but was the result of them living “different lives.” One friend was quoted as saying:

“Johnny speaks incredibly highly of Courteney. They had a very deep relationship, and they remain extremely amicable. They are great friends and care about each other very much.” 

Courteney Cox and Johnny McDaid had previously broken up during couples therapy

Courteney Cox and Johnny McDaid began dating in late 2013. They reportedly met for the first time at a star-studded house party hosted by the Cougar Town star. During her 2022 appearance on The Howard Stern Show, the actress recalled their first encounter and said, “I remember seeing Johnny and going, ‘Oh wow. He’s really intense.’ He’s got the eyes. And he’s playing the piano.” Courteney confessed that at the time she thought he was really handsome. Nine months after this, they decided to get engaged. However, it did not last for long as they called off their engagement in late 2015. 

Courteney and Johnny reconciled in the following years but did not get re-engaged. Later, during a 2024 episode of the Minnie Questions with Minnie Driver podcast, Courteney claimed that they had initially broken up during a couples therapy session. In her words:

“Three years in, we broke up, and it was really intense. We broke up in therapy. I didn’t know it was coming, whether I should have or not. He just broke up within the first minute. And I was like, what? We were engaged, and I was so shocked. I was in so much pain. He wasn’t trying to surprise me. He was in that much pain in the relationship. There was that much that needed to be dealt with that he had to protect himself around his heart.”

Courteney noted that their split had taught her how to reclaim her voice and her boundaries. She claimed that she was “thankful for the breakup” as it helped their relationship transform when they got back together again the next year. She added:

“It really taught me how I operated in the world. What were the things from my childhood that I needed? Like, whether it was to be adored by men or things that I didn’t know how to let go to be in a relationship. To not take things personally, my boundaries. I just went into myself and I had a great therapist.”

Courteney Cox wanted to have a baby with Johnny McDaid 

Throughout their decade-long relationship, Courteney had always been open about the fact that she wanted to have a baby with her boyfriend, Johnny McDaid. During an interview in 2017, she said that she could carry someone else’s egg. According to her, she may have been one of the older people doing it, but she claimed that she “would love to, with Johnny, that is.”
