Jerry Jones wasn’t going to let Mr. Automatic go anywhere with his golden right leg.

The Cowboys re-signed Brandon Aubrey to a record-breaking extension worth $28 million over the next four years, including $20 million fully guaranteed, according to multiple reports, making him the highest-paid kicker in NFL history.

Beyond his accuracy, Aubrey has the most powerful leg in the NFL. He has converted 35 of 44 kicks of over 50 yards and has had a long of 60 or better each season.

Aubrey, 31, was a star soccer player at Notre Dame and was a first-round draft pick by Toronto FC. However, he never appeared for the MLS squad and was lent to Toronto FC II of the USL. He would also play for Bethlehem Steel in the USL before the team cut him after the 2018 season.

He then started a career as software engineer, though his wife implored him to attempt a football career.

“You could do that,” Aubrey’s wife, Jenn, reportedly said before he joined the USFL to begin training to be a kicker in the NFL.

Aubrey kicked in the USFL for three seasons from 2020-23 before joining the Cowboys in 2023.

Aubrey’s contract tops the previous records set by Ka’imi Fairbairn, who just signed a two-year, $13 million deal with the Texans, while Harrison Butker signed a four-year $25.6 million contract in 2024 with the Chiefs.

In three years in Dallas, Aubrey is the fifth most accurate kicker in NFL history, making 88.19 percent of his kicks.

The deal will keep Aubrey with the team through the 2029 season, and, health permitting, he could become the team’s all-time leading scorer.

Aubrey has accumulated 462 points for the Cowboys, the sixth most in team history.

The record for the Cowboys is 986 total points, which running back Emmitt Smith has held since 2002.

With Aubrey nearly halfway there in three years, his current trajectory has him potentially at the top of the Cowboys’ record books before the end of the decade.
