Hyderabad:Firecracker dealers have reported a decline in sales volumes ahead of Diwali as prices have risen by up to 20 per cent following an increase in raw material costs. However, the industry has introduced several new varieties of crackers to attract buyers.
According to the Telangana Fireworks Dealers Association, firecracker sales in the twin cities amount to around ₹150 crore during Diwali every year. Customers were purchasing fewer crackers because of higher prices.
This year, manufacturers have introduced 15 varieties of flowerpots aimed at different age groups, with an emphasis on safety. Several new aerial display crackers have also entered the market.
Temporary firecracker stalls have been set up at NTR Stadium, Dhobi Ghat in Mudfort, Goshamahal, Chikkadpally, Mahbubgunj, Osmangunj, Feelkhana and Tarnaka, among other locations. Shoppers began thronging these markets on Friday.
Avinash Singh, at NTR Stadium, said, “The prices are more, whereas the budget for the crackers as same as last year. So the quantity of crackers we purchased becomes less. Nowadays even children are understanding. They are adjusting with whatever firecrackers we bring home.”
Despite the availability of firecrackers through online platforms, many customers prefer visiting stalls. “The shopping for the crackers at the stalls gives different experience,” said Raghuveer, a BPO employee.
Dealers Association convener Manik Rao said manufacturers were ensuring that crackers complied with permissible limits.
He attributed the decline in sales to rising prices which particularly affected middle-class families. “They have the budget. When they reach the shops, the rates are higher,” he said.
