It’s been five months since Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Today Show host, Savannah Guthrie, disappeared from her Arizona home under mysterious circumstances. Nancy was last seen at night on January 31, 2026 (ET) by her daughter, Annie Guthrie’s husband, Tommaso Cioni. Ever since the FBI released photos and videos of a masked person of interest in Nancy’s case, the internet has been buzzing with theories regarding Tommaso Cioni being the kidnapper. Recently, an unseen photo of him reading a book surfaced, raising eyebrows and sparking chatter among social media users.

Why did Tommaso Cioni’s photo of reading a book spark online chatter?

Annie Guthrie’s husband, Tommaso Cioni has been a subject of constant discussion ever since Nancy Guthrie disappeared without a trace. The reason for it is that Tommaso was the last person to see his mother-in-law before her alleged kidnapping. Recently, in July 2026, journalist, Jonathan Lee Riches (popularly known as JLR) shared an unseen picture of Tommaso on X (formerly Twitter) in which he was seen peeking through a book. As to why the seemingly simple picture became a major talking point is that the book her was reading was Absolute Watchmen by Alan Moore, which is a murder mystery.

Tommaso’s intense staring into the camera creeped out many who came across the post. One wrote, “What A Creepy Pic… Would hate to run into him in a Dark Alley!” Another stated, “Him and his wife are not right. I know everyone thinks that.” A third commented, “He is so creepy!!! Actually frightening! WOW!” A forth echoes similar sentiments, claiming all of Tommaso Cioni’s shots scare them or make them uncomfortable. They stated, “Every picture I see of him is eerily creepy.” As popular public theory about Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance suggest that Annie and Tommaso might have killed her, him reading a murder mystery adds on to the suspicion.

Why does the public think Tommaso Cioni has a motive to kill Nancy Guthrie?

Annie Guthrie and her husband, Tommaso Cioni, allegedly asked Nancy Guthrie for a loan before her disappearance. The allegation was shared on X by JLR. Notably, he didn’t cite his source, and news outlets have also been unable to confirm the statement’s validity. However, JLR’s dedicated reporting on every update regarding the Nancy Guthrie case led his followers to believe the loan angle.

In JLR’s follow-up tweet, he claimed that Nancy said no to Annie and her husband, Tommaso’s alleged loan request. The investigator claimed to have gotten the information from a source who was aware of the loan-seeking conversations. He didn’t elaborate on when and why Nancy refused monetary help to her daughter and son-in-law. However, the unverified information was enough to spark a horde of fan theories that Annie and Tommaso were salty about it and wanted to get back at Nancy for her behaviour. JLR’s X post could be read as:

“Nancy Guthrie told them NO! She will not be giving them money. So I’m told.”

Tommaso and Annie were already under public scrutiny since speculations regarding their involvement in Nancy Guthrie’s abduction surfaced. The new loan angle fuelled the rumours of the couple kidnapping or killing the 84-year-old woman. “Well that’s a motive right there Nancy just didn’t wander away by herself there was a 3rd party intervention and that’s the mystery that remains,” alleged an online user. Another stated, “I knew the family had something to do with this and that it was over money so sad to do something to your own mom over money it really is the root of evil poor sweet Nancy.”

Annie Guthrie and Tommaso Cioni first get linked to Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance when NewsNation journalist, Ashleigh Banfield claimed on her podcast that he was a “prime suspect,” citing an unverified law enforcement source. Since then, the couple has been facing intense scrutiny.
