Beer Batter Prawns Recipe

This beer batter prawns recipe results in crispy, golden prawns that are perfect for appetizers or party snacks. The light and airy batter, made with chilled beer, enhances the flavor and texture of the prawns. Here’s how to make them!

Ingredients

  • For the Prawns:
    • 15 large prawns, cleaned and deveined
    • 2 cups vegetable oil (for deep frying)
    • 4 teaspoons salt (divided)
  • For Marination:
    • 2 teaspoons black pepper powder
    • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
    • ½ teaspoon salt
  • For the Beer Batter:
    • ¾ cup chilled beer
    • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
    • ¼ cup cornflour (cornstarch)
    • 1 teaspoon black pepper powder
    • ½ teaspoon red chili powder
    • 2 teaspoons pizza seasoning (optional)
    • 2 teaspoons garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Prawns:
    • Wash the prawns thoroughly, discard the heads, and devein them. Leave the tips of the tails intact. Make a slit along the back of each prawn to flatten them slightly.
  2. Marinate the Prawns:
    • In a bowl, mix the prawns with black pepper powder, red chili powder, and salt. Let them marinate for about 15 minutes.
  3. Make the Beer Batter:
    • In a mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, cornflour, black pepper powder, red chili powder, pizza seasoning, and garlic powder. Gradually add chilled beer while whisking until you achieve a thick batter consistency.
  4. Heat the Oil:
    • In a deep frying pan or kadai, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat until hot.
  5. Coat and Fry:
    • Holding each prawn by its tail, dip it into the beer batter to coat well. Allow excess batter to drip off before gently placing it into the hot oil.
    • Fry in batches for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy on both sides. Avoid overcrowding the pan.
  6. Drain and Serve:
    • Once cooked, remove the prawns from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce like mayonnaise or chili sauce.

Tips for Best Results

  • Beer Selection: Use a light lager or ale for best results; it contributes to a lighter batter.
  • Temperature Check: Ensure your oil is hot enough before frying; if it’s too cool, the prawns will absorb more oil.
  • Serving Suggestions: These prawns pair well with cocktails or mocktails for a perfect party snack.

Enjoy your crispy beer batter prawns as a delicious appetizer that’s sure to impress!
