Preview for Crystal Palace v Liverpool

Two clubs in need of a response meet at Selhurst Park on Sunday afternoon. Pierre Sage’s Crystal Palace are in the relegation zone and badly out of form, while Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool have lost back-to-back games for the first time all season.

Liverpool’s week has been a frustrating one. A 1-0 home defeat to Arsenal was followed by a 3-2 loss at Fenerbahçe in the Champions League on Wednesday, despite Iraola’s side taking the lead twice in Istanbul.

“Now, two defeats, it changes. It has to change and it has to be like this in a club like ours. Now we have to react after two defeats,” he said. “We need the win against Palace away and we’ve been, I think, in similar situations – I remember Bournemouth before the international break, even the Brentford game. So, we have to go there and do the job and win the game.”

Liverpool’s away form in the Premier League gives them some encouragement. They have won their last three league games on the road.

There’s an extra twist to this one. When Oliver Glasner left Selhurst Park in the summer, Iraola was reportedly Palace’s first-choice candidate to replace him, before he opened talks with Liverpool after Arne Slot’s sacking.

Palace are in far worse shape. Pierre Sage was appointed in the summer, but the former Lens boss is under growing pressure from supporters. Palace are 18th with seven points from nine games, and they have lost their last three league matches by two or more goals, including a 5-0 hammering at rivals Brighton and a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham last weekend.

Palace are allowing 2.73 expected goals per game, and they have suffered six league defeats, the joint-most in the division.

Iraola expects little to have changed in the way Palace play, despite the change of manager in the summer. “I think, even if they change the manager, there is a continuity in terms of more or less the system is the same, the players are very familiar with the things that they are trying to do,” he said.

There was at least some relief on Thursday night. Ten-man Palace drew 1-1 with Hoffenheim in the Europa League, with Daichi Kamada scoring a late equaliser after Adam Wharton was sent off. That came after a win over Fulham in the EFL Cup.

History offers mixed signals. Liverpool have won 36 of the 67 meetings between the clubs, and Palace have lost nine of their last 11 home games against them. But Palace won 2-1 at Selhurst Park in the league last season, and they also knocked Liverpool out of the EFL Cup with a 3-0 win at Anfield.

The Premier League Table

  • Position 1, 2, 3, 4 : Promotion – Champions League (League phase)
  • Position 5 : Promotion – Europa League (League phase)
  • Position 18, 19, 20 : Relegation – Championship

Team News for Crystal Palace v Liverpool

Palace will be without Jean-Philippe Mateta, who is suspended after being sent off against Tottenham. Jørgen Strand Larsen will lead the line in his place.

Chadi Riad, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Ismaïla Sarr are all out injured. Wharton’s red card against Hoffenheim was in Europe, so he is available here. Dean Henderson is expected to start in goal.

For Liverpool, Alisson is expected to keep his place in goal despite a couple of recent errors. Milos Kerkez and Ronald Araújo should return at full-back after being named on the bench in Istanbul, with Virgil van Dijk and Jeremy Jacquet continuing at centre-back.

Ryan Gravenberch is Liverpool’s only doubt. He has a heel fracture and missed both the Arsenal and Fenerbahçe games. “Ryan is a day to day thing and a matter of pain. Let’s see if he can deal with the pain and help us,” Iraola said. Trey Nyoni is expected to keep his place in midfield if Gravenberch isn’t ready.

Hugo Ekitike, Giovanni Leoni, Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong all remain out. Iraola also confirmed that Bradley Barcola will play as a winger “90% of the time”, ruling out a move into a central striking role.
