Modern maternity fashion done well
Last week, I gave props to Neila Bontempelli who attended the Brownlow Medal mere weeks after giving birth. Tonight I must do the same for Millie Oliver, who is joining her partner Tom Dearden of the North Queensland Cowboys to the Dally M in the final weeks of her pregnancy. Women are amazing!
Thankfully, the days of maternity fashion being drab and dull are long behind us. Oliver looks totally sophisticated in a billowing strapless top and embellished skirt, both in a lustrous gold-green hue. She’s even wearing a sleek nude heel, so I hope Tom gives her the foot massage she deserves when they get home tonight.

A very sweet father-daughter date
An early contender for best dressed is Tahira, who is accompanying her father James Fisher-Harris of the Warriors.
Dressed in a sweet white gown, her a purple orchid lei is a perfect accompaniment. Dad, meanwile, is keeping things casual yet discrete in his slightly undone black-and-white suit and frameless sunglasses.
The big fashion difference between the Brownlow and Dally M red carpets
After reporting on both, I’ve discovered there’s an intriguing dissonance between the Brownlow Medal and the Dally M. Where the Brownlow calls for a small army’s worth of stylists, designers, hair and makeup artists, spray tanners, manicurists and social media managers (and that’s just for one attendee), the Dally M is a much more low-key affair. Many of the Dally M attendees hire dresses themselves, for starters.
While I admire such financial responsibility, what gives? If you ask me (admittedly, a football ignoramus), they share more similarities than differences: both are ritzy awards ceremonies, both celebrate football players and both serve as crucial advertising for MJ Bale.
Is it just a “Sydney is more laid-back” thing? Not necessarily, according to stylist Paul Versace.
“The thing is, with the Dally M, they only get invited a week and a half out. So one of the reasons why the red carpet isn’t like the Brownlow is because they do get invited so late, so how are you supposed to turn out a custom look?” Versace tells me, making an excellent point.
Time constraints aren’t stopping Versace, though. He worked with a number of attendees this year and ensured they got the full red carpet treatment.
Sometimes, less is more
Minimalism isn’t often necessarily synonymous with Dally M fashion, but Madison Pinkus is showing us that it’s not impossible.
Pinkus, partner to Cowboys player Reed Mahoney, has chosen a floorlength turtleneck gown in a shimmering gunmetal material.
She’s kept the accessories minimal, and the beauty luminous with her hair in a slick-back bun that would make Hailey Bieber proud.

Daniel Johns confirms Silverchair won’t return for GF
The NRL has already opted against traditional pre-game entertainment for Sunday’s grand final, but Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns has also confirmed the band won’t be able to fulfil the dreams of Newcastle fans and return to the stage before kick-off.
“For the first time in ages, the three of us actually agree wholeheartedly about something: GO KNIGHTS!!!” Johns posted on Instagram.
“It’s all about the Knights this weekend. We love how footy brings this community together, and it’s pretty special watching the whole Steel City get behind the boys.
“Thanks to everyone who’s asked if we’re playing before the game. We’re way too rusty, so sorry, no can do.
“We won’t be taking the stage, but we’ll be supporting as loudly as everyone else and there in spirit.
Going for gold straight out the gates
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single woman in possession of a wedding invitation, must be in want of a Rachel Gilbert gown. But a Gilbert design will also serve you well on the Dally M red carpet as Fox Sports Australia presenter Eloise Sohier is demonstrating tonight.
Wearing the Hugo Gown, which features 3D laser cut sequins detailed in a floral pattern, Sohier is glowing in the golden embellished design. A fabulous way to kick things off!
