Dane Bowers looks back over ‘puppy love’ relationship with ex Katie Price, his career and that iconic collab with Victoria Beckham
Singer Dane Bowers found fame with R&B band Another Level, and even collaborated with Victoria Beckham on her first post-Spice Girls single.
He also has some famous exes, including Katie Price – he appears on her new Sky documentary series Katie Price: Nothing To Hide – and, more recently, Love Islander Laura Anderson.
Here, the 46-year-old, who was runner-up on Celebrity Big Brother in 2010, opens up to new! about how fame has changed, why he has no immediate plans to return to the UK – and his relationship with Katie…
Hi Dane! What was it like to reflect on your time with Katie for the documentary?
It was cool! My memory’s so bad that they had to remind me of a lot of stuff. It’s weird, because at the time, I was 18, 19 – very young. It was a bit of a whirlwind relationship and it was interesting to talk about it, which is why I agreed to do it.
People ask me all the time, so I thought I might as well at least get my side across and share my memories of it.
Katie called you the “love of her life” – was that mutual?
I’d describe it as puppy love. At that point, you don’t really know what a real relationship is. Because it was so intense, in the public eye and in your face, it made it very difficult.
We did have to tackle a few bits and pieces. I’m not one to rubbish my past or have regrets and it was a big part of my life. There were good memories, and bad.
What’s your relationship with Katie like now?
I don’t mind Kate. If we ran into each other, we’d say hello. It’s been a long time, so there’s no animosity or anything like that.
We have to talk about Lee Andrews – what’s your view?
I don’t follow a lot of stuff that’s going on in England, but you can’t miss the whole thing with her husband, as he lives in Dubai. I know a lot of people who know him. You hear things here and there, it’s like a soap opera, isn’t it? It’s just bizarre.
You were previously with Laura Anderson, what’s it like navigating a relationship with another celebrity?
I don’t particularly like being in the public eye. It wasn’t my favourite part of what we did – even back then. I was a bit younger then and obviously enjoyed it a bit more. But now, I like to keep my head down. Those two relationships [Katie and Laura] were the exact opposite. They had to keep that part of their life on the high end; fame was important to them for their work. For me, it wasn’t really, so it wasn’t the easiest thing.
Did it make you want to keep your current relationship out of the spotlight?
I have a relationship now, she’s great – nothing fazes her. The whole Katie thing, she’s not bothered by it at all. I prefer that – no aggro. There’s a mutual respect between us, and we’re just happy with how things are.
You rose to fame in the 90s and 00s, how does the music industry differ now?
I don’t think there are really any “stars” now. Before, there were superstars because you didn’t know anything about them. Michael Jackson was a superstar. You had to go to his show, you had to wait for his video to come out to watch it. Now everything’s so accessible. If you like someone, you follow them on Instagram or TikTok. You see what they’re having for breakfast, you see what they’re doing that day.
It was different for you back in the day, wasn’t it?
We had to record a song in a proper studio, have it pressed, do interviews, tour. It’s easier now; you have to be good, but it’s a lot easier. Before, where people aspired to be was almost unobtainable. I think that’s made a big difference.
What was it like to work with Victoria Beckham on Out Of Your Mind?
Victoria’s brilliant; very professional. We were serious about what we wanted to do, but had lots of fun, too. There was an intense promotional tour for the single, but we had our families with us. She has a great family and they’re really nice to be around. I was really proud of the song, and it did very well.
You live in Dubai – do you see yourself moving back home?
I’ve got an events company there, we do lots of interactive events. I’ve been in Dubai for 10 years now, which is mad. I’m happy there. I can’t really see myself leaving for a while.
Where will we see you next?
Doing a few shows with Another Level. We’re having a good time and we don’t put any pressure on ourselves. I’m not bothered by the fame and madness. I like to be calm and have a good life, which I’ve got, so I’m a happy boy.
