Dave Grohl’s daughter has paid a touching tribute to one of his former girlfriends following her tragic death. Music icon Dave, 57, was in a relationship with American musician Jennifer Precious Finch of the rock band L7 in the early 1990s.
While the couple didn’t go the distance, it is believed that they remained friends in the years following their break-up. Over the weekend, it was announced that Jennifer had died at the age of 59 after being diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer.
The music world has been mourning the L7 star – whose hits include the songs Fast and Frightening and Pretend We’re Dead. While Foo Fighters star Dave has not yet publicly commented on Jennifer’s death, his 20-year-old daughter Violet, whom he shares with wife Jordyn Blum, has branded the late star a “legend”.
On Saturday, Jennifer’s family shared the heartbreaking news that the singer had died. Taking to Instagram, an image of the star was shared alongside a statement, with the family writing: “We are devastated to announce the death of our partner, sister, daughter, and friend Jennifer Precious Finch.
“Jennifer’s impact on the world of music was seismic; her impact on our lives, even more so. We appreciate everyone’s interest and concern. Thank you for all the kind messages. We appreciate some space to heal privately during this difficult time.”
Responding to the post, Violet wrote: “This is so devastating, she was such a force xx made so many feel so seen. rest in peace legend.”
A week prior to her death, a GoFundMe was set up to help raise funds for treatment for Jennifer. A statement alongside the fundraiser stated: “If you’ve followed Jennifer Precious Finch over the years, you probably know her as a musician, artist, writer, photographer, and someone who’s never been very good at sitting still.
“Now she’s facing something she never expected: an aggressive form of brain cancer. When she first heard the diagnosis, there was reason to believe that treatment, including a full course of radiation, would get her back to some version of normal living. Unforeseen complications led to multiple surgeries and a string of difficult setbacks.
“The cancer and everything that comes with it have left her with significant physical limitations so she’s handling this the only way she knows how: one day at a time.”
The appeal continued: “The level of care Jennifer needs has gone beyond what friends and family can safely provide around the clock. As we face the difficult reality that Jennifer may have more good days behind her than ahead, we are asking for help to make the time she has with her friends, family, and fans as comfortable, meaningful, and full of love as possible.”
Jennifer had previously battled thyroid cancer, and L7 had embarked on a reunion tour in part to help the performer and one of her bandmates recover from personal difficulties.
Lead singer Donita Sparks gave an interview in 2016 where she opened up about some of the difficulties the band had faced before they decided to go on a reunion tour after going on hiatus in 2001. Speaking to Stomp and Stammer about the long wait between 2001 and 2016, Donita said: “It wasn’t even thought of until a couple years ago. We were not… I was not pining to get the band back together. Believe it or not, this all happened very organically.
“We were not strategising anything for the last ten years, or 15 years. We were kind of estranged from each other. Jennifer was ill [thyroid cancer], so she was going through that. Suzi was taking care of her mother, her ill mother, for years.… You know, I was kind of noticing the social media aspects of our fans posting things, and starting Facebook pages, and posting YouTubes and all this stuff, and I thought, ‘Wow! This is interesting…’
“So by the time our old booking agent called and said, ‘Hey, do you want me to submit you guys for festivals?’ I was like, ‘What? We’re not even a band!’ I didn’t know that there was that much demand for us to come back. And then I was like, ‘Eh, why not?’ You know, we’re getting older – if we’re gonna do it, we should do it now. But I really never thought it was gonna happen, nor did I even think I would want it to happen.”
In May this year, the band announced they would be going on a final North American tour, titled The Last Hurrah 2026. The tour had been planned to begin in October, while Donita teased that a brand new EP of music was being worked on and that the tour would expand to other locations around the world.
On 13 July, Jennifer’s brain cancer diagnosis was revealed along with the news that she would not be joining the tour. Tragically, just five days later, it was announced that the bass player had died at the age of 59.
