David Beckham became emotional during his Hollywood Walk of Fame acceptance speech and made sure to dedicate the honour to all of his children despite the absence of Brooklyn amid their public feud
David Beckham became “emotional” as he mentioned his children whilst accepting his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The footballer, 51, became the latest celebrity to receive the honour on the Los Angeles tourist attraction with a glamorous ceremony that all took place on Friday afternoon.
He was supported by his wife Victoria, whom he married in 1999 following her rise to fame as a member of the Spice Girls, and their children Harper, 14, Romeo, 23, and Cruz, 21, but notably absent was their eldest Brooklyn, who has become publicly estranged from his family after marrying heiress Nicola Peltz.
Despite the rift David spoke of how much he loved all of his kids as he accepted the prestigious honour. He said: “My parents and my sisters who have always supported my dreams. Victoria, my amazing wife of almost 30 years, without whom none of this would be possible or enjoyable.
“My beautiful children are the reason I get out of bed in the morning. Kids, I’m going to get emotional now, kids, I hope you bring my grandchildren here one day and tell them about a boy who dreamed big. To make you all proud is my greatest achievement, I am so grateful for you all, I love you.”
Meanwhile, just hours before the occasion took place, David insisted that he did not want to talk about his fractured relationship with Brooklyn.
When asked about the subject, he told Variety: “To be honest, I’m sorry to stop you there, but that’s a private matter. That’s the one thing that I don’t want to talk about.” Brooklyn lives just 20 minutes from ceremony all took place, but insiders have previously claimed that it “just wouldn’t be the time or place” for a reunion after their public fallout.
“David can’t wait for his star unveiling ceremony. He’ll have Victoria by his side, and her speech is incredibly moving. His close friend Tom Cruise will also honour his career, which will be a huge moment for him,” a source told Metro.
“Brooklyn lives less than 20 minutes away from where the ceremony will be, but won’t be attending. It wouldn’t be the right time or place for a family reunion after everything that’s happened between them.”
Brooklyn and his parents spectacularly fell out and in an explosive moment this January, he released a statement where he accused his parents of “trying endlessly to ruin my relationship since before my wedding”.
I have been silent for years and made every effort to keep these matters private. Unfortunately, my parents and their team have continued to go to the press, leaving me with no choice but to speak for myself and tell the truth about only some of the lies that have been printed,” he said in the lengthy statement.
“I do not want to reconcile with my family. I’m not being controlled, I’m standing up for myself for the first time in my life. For my entire life, my parents have controlled narratives in the press about our family.
“The performative social media posts, family events and inauthentic relationships have been a fixture of the life I was born into.” He added: “Recently, I have seen with my own eyes the lengths that they’ll go through to place countless lies in the media, mostly at the expense of innocent people, to preserve their own façade. But I believe the truth always comes out.”
Since then, Victoria hit back at Brooklyn’s claims and said she has always tried to be there for her kids. “I think that we’ve always – we love our children so much”, she said. “We’ve always tried to be the best parents that we can be. And you know, we’ve been in the public eye for more than 30 years right now, and all we’ve ever tried to do is protect our children and love our children. And you know, that’s all I really want to say about it.”
