Dax Shepard and Kate Hudson’s split explained
Dax and Kate first met at fellow actor Tobey Maguire’s house. At the time, the two were in other relationships. Recently, during a conversation with the guests, Sara and Erin Foster, Dax revealed that he met Kate through her brother, Oliver Hudson. He shared that it started with friendship, which later turned into an intense romance.
Dax recalled how he had hit on Kate when she was still married to Chris Robinson. The Armchair Expert host said that he gave ‘111 per cent of charm’ that he had to impress the actress. In fact, in 2006, after Kate and Chris Robinson parted ways, Dax didn’t pass up the chance and tried to woo her again at a mutual friend’s dinner party.
Dax added that since then they were together. They used to make out all day long. He said, “From that night on, we were just together every single day. We were making out, f***ing all day long.” Previously, during a 2019 episode of his podcast, Armchair Expert, Dax shared that their romance was a memorable, wonderful, and fun experience. However, their relationship was short-lived.
In the same episode, Dax shared what really went wrong in their short-lived relationship. He admitted that they were at ‘different places’ in their lives. Dax said that he felt inferior around Kate. He said:
“I felt very ‘less than’ around you quite often. I think I was just at the point where I was not gonna get hired for movies anymore… And you were at that time making the most you ever made and having the most opportunity.”
Kate, who was also part of the conversation, shared she was unable to fully commit to Shepard because of her busy career. She said, “Honestly, I wasn’t giving Dax what he needed, and I was making choices that were not relationship-focused.”

After separating from Hudson, Dax found love in Kristen Bell. The duo initially crossed paths in 2007 at an intimate sushi dinner celebrating the birthday of Shauna Robertson, producer of Forgetting Sarah Marshall. The couple hit a rough patch for the first time in the same year. Just three months after they started dating, Bell already felt that Dax was someone she wanted to spend her life with.
Bell was emotionally invested in the relationship and wanted a long-term commitment. However, the Armchair Expert host didn’t feel the same way at that time. Dax told Kristen that although he thought she was a wonderful person, he was still dating other women and wasn’t ready for commitment. Bell was heartbroken but accepted Dax’s honesty. However, things changed after four days when Dax admitted that he had made a mistake by walking away from her.
The couple got engaged in late 2009. In March 2013, they welcomed their first child, daughter Lincoln Bell Shepard. Later that year, in October 2013, Shepard and Bell tied the knot in a private ceremony at the Beverly Hills courthouse. The couple completed thirteen years of marriage on October 17, 2026. They share two children.
