Politicians, clergy, and celebrities have rushed to defend their reputations as decades-old allegations resurface

The release of Hungary’s communist-era secret police records has triggered political accusations, public denials, and fears of a witch hunt, as prominent figures scramble to defend their reputations against allegations of collaboration.

The records contain the names of an estimated 50,000-60,000 people, raising concerns about public shaming, reputational damage, and painful family revelations. Critics warn that many files are incomplete or unreliable, and historians stress that appearing in the registers does not necessarily mean collaboration with the secret police.

Former Prime Minister Viktor Orban is also embroiled in the controversy. Earlier this week, Hungary’s last communist-era premier, Miklos Nemeth, accused him of informing on fellow soldiers during compulsory military service in the early 1980s.

Orban and his Fidesz party dismissed the allegation. The former prime minister said he refused an attempt to recruit him and was subsequently placed under surveillance. He published declassified Interior Ministry documents that he said support his account.
