Kakinada: Demand is growing in Kakinada for the establishment of a Government Ayurvedic Medical College linked to the proposed 50-bed Ayurvedic Hospital being constructed on the premises of the Government Girls Polytechnic (GPT) College.
Several representations have been submitted to the government seeking allocation of land for the college. On Monday, Godavari District Railway Passengers Association general secretary D.N. Ramesh submitted a representation to District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad requesting allotment of five acres of GPT land for the institution.
Ramesh said a 50-bed Ayurvedic Hospital is already under construction at the site under the National Health Mission and argued that an Ayurvedic Medical College should be established alongside it. He said the growing public preference for Ayurvedic treatment and the support being extended to traditional medicine by both the Central and State governments justified the proposal.
He said Kakinada, as the district headquarters with good transport connectivity, would be an ideal location for an Ayurvedic Medical College and would benefit students from across the region. He also urged the authorities to expedite completion of the Ayurvedic Hospital.
According to sources, the collector suggested identifying an alternative site instead of using GPT land. However, Ramesh opposed the proposal and demanded that the college be established within the same premises where the hospital is being constructed.
He told Deccan Chronicle that he would intensify the agitation if the government failed to allocate land at the GPT campus, claiming that people across Kakinada were united in support of the demand.
The issue is expected to remain under consideration as representations continue to be made to the government.
