A depraved British teacher was sentenced to seven years in prison Thursday for sexually assaulting a 10-year-old student she tied to her marital bed — and called by her husband’s name while having sex.
Once “gregarious” teacher Deborah Franklin, now 65, sat motionless in court as she was sentenced for the depraved, year-long abuse in the 1990s that her victim called “a constant shadow” with “painful emotional and psychological consequences.”
“I want to cry for the boy I was and the childhood I lost,” the victim, now in his 40s, said in an impact statement.
Franklin was the boy’s teacher at school Hertfordshire, England, and later also his private teacher when she used a “ton of manipulation” to trick him into thinking they were in a “relationship” — even though he was just 10.
After first shocking him by kissing him on the lips, the married teacher told the innocent boy she wanted to teach him “how to touch a woman” — before having sex in multiple locations over several years, including his brother’s bedroom and her own marital bed.
“She asked me to come on the bed. I think it was her marital bed. I remember her tying me. Tying my arms down,” he recalled.
“She had a feather. Some kind of feathery gloves and fur. She tickled me. I remember being strapped down to the bed and blindfolded. I guess I had no clue as to what was happening. I went with it and trusted her.”
At least once she blurted out her husband’s name while having sex with the student.
“It began to bother me when I was around 14,” the victim recalled. “I was tied to the posts, blindfolded and she was tickling me naked and I remember her being surprised I didn’t enjoy it,” he said, saying the trauma stole the “cheeky child” he had been.
“I have carried the abuse with me throughout my life. It has been a constant shadow,” the victim said in a statement released by police.
“My life has been shaped by what happened to me when I was boy. Abuse of boys should never be dismissed, minimised or treated as less serious than abuse of girls. The emotional and psychological consequences can be equally serious and long-lasting.”
Franklin initially denied even knowing the boy when police first confronted her in 2024 — even though there were photographs of them together on school trips, including one where they were holding hands.
The ex-teacher was convicted in July of eight counts of gross indecency with a boy under 14 between 1991 and 1995.
Judge Kamran Choudhry told Franklin there was “no evidence” she showed any “remorse or empathy” allowing for a lesser sentence.
The victim “was a child, you were his teacher, tutor, and trusted adult,” the judge told her.
“Instead of guiding him, you abused that position for your own sexual gratification. The consequences of your abuse have been enduring for decades.”
Franklin must serve two-thirds of her seven-year sentence before being eligible for the UK Version of parole. She has also been banned from teaching.
“This investigation was challenging and complex because it involved allegations of child sexual abuse dating back more than 30 years,” Liz McGrath, Detective Constable, said, praising her accuser for “his courage.”
