After almost a year of disruptive renovation works, long-distance trains between Berlin and Hamburg will finally run again on Sunday. Deutsche Bahn is offering cut-price tickets to mark the occasion.

Works on the 280-kilometre railway between Berlin and Humburg began on August1st last year and were due to finish at the end of April, but bad weather meant the renovation continued a month and a half longer than planned.

Now, as a token of gratitude for passengers patience, Deutsche Bahn is offering 100,000 extra tickets for a high-speed trip between the two cities at €14.99.

The offer is available from Friday June 12th until Sunday the 14th, and the cut-price tickets can be booked for travel any time from June 14th until December 12th 2026.

But even with the reopening of the line, it’s not all plain-sailing: the railway company has said that it still needs to inspect the new signalling and interlocking technology on the section between Hagenow Land and Spandau station and test runs will need to continue after Sunday.

This means that ICE trains will have to travel at slower speeds on some sections and journey times will therefore take a few minutes longer than usual.

There are also further restrictions ahead for railway passengers in Berlin and surrounding regions. On Monday, June 15th, the Berlin railway between Charlottenburg and Ostbahnhof will be closed to long-distance and regional trains, so fewer trains will be able to run in each direction.

And, from July 18th to August 14th, trains will only run hourly between the two cities during the completion of the Sternbrücke railway bridge in Hamburg.

The works in the Hanseatic city will have a widespread impact on rail passengers, with long-distance journeys affected including those to Frankfurt and the Ruhrgebiet – only one ICE train will run to each per hour. Trains between Hamburg and Munich will only run every two hours.
