The Phoenix Mercury worked with franchise icon DeWanna Bonner in August, allowing Bonner to chase a championship in what could be her final season in the WNBA. She nearly accomplished that goal, helping the Atlanta Dream reach the WNBA Finals, where the team ultimately fell in seven games.
If that was truly the end for Bonner, she isn’t saying it just yet. Days after the WNBA Finals, Bonner issued a statement on her season and time with the Dream. She called her move to Atlanta “life changing.”
Bonner credited her Dream teammates, thanking them for “welcoming me with open arms.” She added, “I could not have asked for a better group.”

Dream star Angel Reese responded to that message, saying it was an “honor to play with” Bonner down the stretch.
After being bought out by the Mercury in late August, Bonner signed with the Dream within days. She appeared in just five regular-season games with the team, where she averaged 8.6 points.
Bonner maintained that role during the team’s postseason run, averaging 20.1 minutes per contest. She averaged 7.7 points and scored double-digit points in four of the team’s first five playoff games. Bonner was quieter in the Finals, where she averaged 3.7 points per game in the series.
With the WNBA Finals over, it’s up to the 39-year-old Bonner to decide whether she wants to keep going. She doesn’t have much left to accomplish in the league. Over her 17-year career, Bonner is a six-time All-Star, three-time Sixth Player of the Year winner, two-time All-WNBA selection and two-time champion.

While Bonner’s production has waned in recent seasons, she’s still capable of strong performances. Because of that, it sounds like Bonner will wait to make an announcement about her future.
There’s still enough left in the tank for Bonner to make one final run at another championship. Given all she’s already accomplished in the league, however, Bonner wouldn’t be leaving anything on the table if she walked away now.
