Actor Dhanush has addressed the criticism surrounding Raayan winning the Best Tamil Film honour at the 72nd National Film Awards, acknowledging that many viewers believed other films were more deserving while also reminding audiences that several acclaimed works from his own career never received similar recognition.
Dhanush Responds To Raayan’s National Award Debate
Speaking at a blood donation drive and welfare event organised by his fan association on Sunday, the actor-filmmaker responded to the online debate that followed Raayan’s National Award victory. The 2024 action drama, which Dhanush both directed and headlined, has remained a talking point ever since the awards were announced, with many cinephiles arguing that films such as Meiyazhagan, Amaran and Maharaja were stronger contenders.
Rather than dismissing the criticism, Dhanush said he respected the audience’s opinion. However, he also reflected on how several of his own films, including Pudhupettai, Raanjhanaa, Maryan, Vada Chennai and Karnan, were widely considered award-worthy but went unrecognised.
The actor suggested that awards often come down to timing and circumstance rather than merit alone. He pointed out that there was no comparable public outcry when those earlier films missed out on National Awards. According to Dhanush, some films simply are not destined to receive such recognition despite their quality. “This time, one of my films received the award,” he said, implying that the honour was meant to come to Raayan.
His remarks coincided with the film’s second release anniversary. While Raayan opened to mixed critical reception in July 2024, it struck a chord with audiences and emerged as one of the biggest commercial successes of Dhanush’s career. The film went on to gross over Rs 150 crore worldwide, making it one of his highest-grossing releases alongside Tere Ishk Mein.
Political Buzz Grows After Welfare Appeal
Beyond the National Award discussion, Dhanush’s speech also reignited speculation about a possible political entry.
For the past few weeks, rumours about the actor stepping into politics have intensified, particularly after his fan club unveiled a flag associated with him. Although Dhanush stopped short of making any announcement, many interpreted his latest address as a sign that he may be laying the groundwork through organised welfare initiatives, drawing comparisons with Vijay’s recent political journey.
Addressing the gathering, Dhanush urged his fans to channel their collective strength into meaningful public service.
“So many people have gathered in one place… This kind of unity has a power. You need to give that unity a positive way and a purpose, not just through audio launches and meet-ups. Join hands and do more welfare work. Do whatever you can for the people in your area and the families living around your house. I want to feel even more proud of all of you. I hope you all do it.”
His emphasis on community service immediately sparked fresh discussions online, with many fans viewing it as a possible indication of larger ambitions. However, neither Dhanush nor his family has confirmed any political plans. Earlier, when asked about the speculation, his father, filmmaker Kasthuri Raja, had replied, “I really don’t know. You should ask him this question.”
On the professional front, Dhanush has one of the busiest line-ups in Indian cinema. He is currently shooting Om (D55) with director Rajkumar Periasamy, which also stars Mammootty, Sai Pallavi and Sreeleela. He will next collaborate with Thamizharasan Pachamuthu for D56 before reuniting with Mari Selvaraj after Karnan. He also has Thamizh Murugan with Vetri Maaran in development, besides long-awaited biopics on Ilaiyaraaja and former President APJ Abdul Kalam.
