There was a time when a cricketer’s only accessory was a sweatband. Not anymore. In just a few seasons, diamonds and luxury jewellery have become cricket’s newest style statement. Hardik Pandya’s ear studs shine almost as brightly as his sixes, while KL Rahul keeps his look sharp and understated. Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan bring Gen Z confidence with chains, pendants and diamond accents. Even Virat Kohli and M.S. Dhoni have embraced the trend.

This is no longer just about fashion. Cricketers once flexed with luxury watches. Now the style equation has shifted. Tennis bracelets, layered chains, diamond studs and statement pendants are becoming part of the modern cricket aesthetic, with watches almost taking a backseat.

Cricket is making diamonds personal

De Beers decided to bring diamonds into cricket culture and roped in cricketers Abhishek Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav, positioning the stones as symbols of individuality, confidence and personal success. Toranj Mehta, country head of category marketing at De Beers India, explained the shift in how young cricketers view jewellery. “For Abhishek, diamonds were never ‘too much’. They are stylish, youthful and made for men. He played with the looks and the confidence hit instantly, the pieces just got his vibe,” she said. Speaking about Suryakumar Yadav, Mehta added, “Diamonds aren’t for weddings anymore. Jewellery is identity. His pendant doesn’t just accessorise, it announces. The same precision he shows on-field, he wears off it.” According to Mehta, the trend reflects how cricketers today are no longer seen only as athletes. “They are the style inspiration for millions. Diamonds are their way of saying, ‘This is me.’ No more uniforms, no more rules. Diamonds are now everyday language for them,” she said.

Gold chains are out, tennis bracelets are in

Celebrity stylist Lehan Devadhiaa, who styles cricketer Yashasvi Jaiswal off the field, says cricket fashion has evolved far beyond the traditional gold chain. “Cricket style has levelled up. Today’s players are taking cues from global runways too. Tennis necklaces, layered chains, statement pieces,” she says. According to Devadhiaa, styling high-value jewellery for cricketers involves intense planning and security. “When the jewellery costs more than the shoot, every step is choreographed. Sourcing runs through trusted jewellers or brand tie-ups, fully documented. Handling is under watch like armoured transport,” she says adding that insurance and liability systems have also become far more professional. Asked why cricketers are gravitating toward tennis bracelets and pendants, she explains, “Balance. They are luxury without the weight. Clean, versatile and field-to-street ready, exactly what cricketers want. They finish a look easily.”

What it takes to make studs match-ready

Celebrity jeweller Archana Aggarwal, who has worked with cricketer Abhishek Sharma, says modern cricketers are redefining men’s jewellery with pieces that blend luxury and everyday style. “Diamond studs literally go with everything. Cricketers want expensive-looking but everyday-chill jewellery. Studs are clean, sleek and work with hoodies and suits too,” she says, adding that tennis bracelets and simple diamond pendants are also trending.

According to Aggarwal, every player has a distinct style personality. “Virat loves the spotlight, so edgy diamonds with strong details work for him. KL Rahul prefers class and simplicity, while younger players like Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan want cool pieces that work everywhere, from team lunches to fancy dinners.”

She also reveals the technical planning behind custom jewellery for athletes. “It’s not just design, it’s engineering. Pieces have to be lightweight, secure and comfortable enough for diving and running on the field,” she explains. From airport looks to IPL warm-ups and ad campaigns, cricketers have turned diamonds into a modern style statement that now feels as natural as the jersey itself.
