
Hyderabad: After more than 35 years in defence research and a career linked to technologies ranging from Akash missile guidance systems to India’s first directed energy weapon programme, Hyderabad-based scientist Jagannath Nayak has been appointed Director-General (missiles and strategic systems, MSS) of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
Nayak, a distinguished scientist and director of the Centre for High Energy Systems and Sciences (CHESS), Hyderabad, will assume charge on Wednesday following the superannuation of U. Raja Babu.
Known for his work in advanced avionics, inertial navigation systems, lasers and fibre optics, Nayak led the development, field testing and transfer of technology of India’s first directed energy weapon (DEW) system while heading CHESS. The technology is regarded as a significant step in the country’s efforts to develop future defence capabilities.
As project director at Research Centre Imarat (RCI), here, he spearheaded the indigenous development of fibre optic gyroscopes (FOG), a critical technology deployed in missiles, aircraft and main battle tanks. He is also credited as a chief architect of the FOG-based guidance system for Akash missiles and DEW-based anti-drone systems.
Nayak completed his master’s degree and PhD in electrical communication engineering from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. He has published more than 125 research papers, authored several books and guided over 10 PhD scholars. He has served as a distinguished visiting professor at IISc and Indian Institute of Technology Madras between 2009 and 2014.
His honours include the Aryabhata Award, National Aeronautical Prize, DRDO Agni Award for Excellence in Self-Reliance, Nina Saxena Excellence in Technology Award and the Aeronautical Society of India Swarna Jayanti Award.
He is a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, Optical Society of India and Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers, and currently serves as Secretary of the INAE Hyderabad Chapter.
Telangana Board Releases Phase-2 Intermediate Admission Schedule; Deadline Extended to July 31
Hyderabad: The Board of Intermediate Education has issued the Phase-2 admission schedule for first year intermediate admissions for the academic year 2026-27, extending the admission process till July 31, in the view of SSC supplementary results release.
Principals are directed to follow the rule of reservation in admissions as per rules in force. Colleges are instructed not to conduct any test for admission and admissions should be made only up to the sanctioned seat limits.
During the period of admissions the managements were requested to display at the building the number of sections sanctioned by the board and the number of vacant seats. Principals are directed to take measures to ensure security to girl students.
They were instructed to implement a mandatory anti-drug declaration for both students and parents during admission process. The board advised parents and students to take admission in affiliated junior colleges only. The list is provided in the official website of TGBIE.
