Chennai: With just a day left for the conclusion of campaign in the Madurantakam and Dharapuram by-elections, former Chief Ministers M K Stalin and Edappadi K Palaniswami attacked Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay and his TVK levelling a plethora of allegations and warning the people of disastrous consequences if they voted for the ruling party candidates.
Addressing campaign meetings at different places in Madurantakam constituency, both the leaders accused the TVK of corruption and Vijay of deceiving the people of the State and warned the people against supporting him.
Stalin was canvassing votes for DMK candidate Paranthaman and Palaniswami was seeking votes in favour of his party nominee Kanitha Sampath when both the leaders told voters that the by-elections were caused not due to unavoidable reasons but were thrust on them by the TVK that indulged in blatant horse trading.
Referring to Vijay’s contention that the candidates elected in the general elections joined the TVK only after resigning their seats, Stalin said that if they had not resigned, they would have attracted the provisions of the anti-defection law.
Agreeing that the DMK lost the election because it was fighting political enemies and did not bother about the TVK since it saw them as a bunch of newbies and due to large scale deletions in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, he said that party was now buying AIADMK members.
The Chief Minister had gone to Madurantakam the previous day for a shoot when he had a cup of tea at a shop and paid Rs 500 without even knowing how much the people pay for a cup of tea every day, Stalin said, adding that a cup of tea that was sold at Rs 10 before he came to power was now sold at Rs 15. The prices of rice, sugar, vegetables had all gone up, he said.
Palaniswami also referred to the incident and claimed that Vijay did not drink the tea from the cup that was handed over to him. He just placed his lips in the cup and left as he was visiting a tea shop only now in his life and he was entering a village only now, he said.
Even the Communist parties were now opposing the TVK, he said, adding that the party was giving cash for votes though they claimed to be pure. He also referred to the increase in prices of commodities. Sugar prices had shot by Rs 25, price of rice had shot by Rs 20 and that of all commodities had gone up due to the incompetence of the TVK government, he said.
