MADURAI: Minister for energy resources and law C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar has alleged that the previous DMK government had mishandled the Veeramani case, and claimed that several police personnel were also involved in the matter.
Inspecting arrangements at the Gandhi museum here on Saturday, ahead of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s visit to the city to inaugurate the ‘Thai Maaman Thanga Mothiram’ scheme on September 28, Nirmal Kumar told mediapersons that the DMK’s strong reaction to the Veeramani case indicated that something was wrong with the manner in which the case had been handled by the previous Stalin-led government.
Agreeing that a case had been registered against the businessman by the previous DMK government, Nirmal Kumar alleged that it was registered only to facilitate negotiations, and claimed that deals involving hundreds of crores of rupees had been struck with the accused. He questioned why the businessman was not arrested by the previous government that had registered the case.
The TVK minister further alleged that attempts had been made to protect Veeramani and that several persons had extorted money from him by threatening him. He also alleged that police personnel were involved in the matter and questioned what action the then chief minister M.K. Stalin had taken.
Nirmal Kumar said the TVK government, led by Vijay, will take appropriate action against all those involved in the case.
Reacting to CPI(M) state secretary Shanmugam’s allegation that the TVK government was attempting to suppress the case, Nirmal Kumar said he had spoken to the Communist leader, who clarified that his remarks on the issue had been misunderstood.
On power cuts, Nirmal Kumar said corrective measures were being taken in the power sector and claimed that the problems would be completely resolved within three months. However, a power cut occurred during the convocation ceremony of the Madurai government law college, which was attended by Nirmal Kumar as the law minister. Madras high court judge Justice Jegadeesh Chandra, raised questions over the power supply situation.
