Doctors’ Groups Call NMC Advisory Arbitrary, Insulting

HYDERABAD: Medical organisations have strongly objected to the National Medical Commission advisory directing colleges to confine students to hostels during NEET‑UG, calling it arbitrary and demeaning to the medical fraternity.

The NMC has directed all medical colleges to conduct classes on Sunday for medical students. In Hyderabad, government medical colleges issued notices saying Sunday will be a working day for UG students and faculty. A senior resident from Hyderabad said the move follows recent examinations for MBBS first‑ and second‑year students and concerns about proxy attendance.

The Healthcare Reforms Doctors Association (HRDA), Telangana, and the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) have written separate letters to the National Medical Commission (NMC), expressing strong objection to its advisory issued on April 23, which asked medical colleges to restrict students to their hostels on May 2 and 3 in view of the NEET‑UG 2026 examination.

The associations said the directive reflects an inappropriate mindset that indirectly treats medical students with suspicion and links them to potential malpractice. They argued that such measures undermine the dignity, integrity and professionalism of the student community while creating an atmosphere of mistrust.

“Medical students are among the most disciplined and dedicated sections of society. Imposing blanket restrictions without justification is unjust and sets a troubling precedent,” the HRDA said in its representation.

Echoing similar concerns, FAIMA stated that maintaining the sanctity of examinations is the responsibility of the conducting authorities. Both organisations demanded immediate withdrawal of the advisory and a formal apology to the medical student community.
