Hyderabad: Materials scientist and defence researcher Dr Gopinath K. took charge as Director of the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL) here. He succeeded to the post on September 21, after more than three decades with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
On taking charge, Dr Gopinath said, “Our focus will remain on accelerating the development of advanced strategic materials and fostering deeper collaboration with industry and academia to ensure our armed forces are equipped with the most robust, indigenously developed technologies.”
Under his leadership, DMRL will focus on providing what the laboratory describes as “total material solutions” for defence, with emphasis on self-reliance in strategic material technologies, a statement said.
Dr Gopinath, Outstanding Scientist, was earlier Associate Director at DMRL, where he led high-priority projects involving aeronautical materials and other core research programmes. As Director, he will lead the laboratory’s work on advanced strategic materials for defence and its efforts to strengthen indigenous capabilities in the sector.
Dr Gopinath joined DRDO in 1994 and, between 1994 and 2008, worked on the indigenous development of materials and components for the Kaveri engine programme, in collaboration with multiple industries. After joining DMRL in 2008, his research focused on high-temperature materials and specialised naval steels, with applications in naval and aerospace platforms.
He has also worked to expand links between defence research and academia. As coordinator of the Gas Turbine Materials & Processes (GTMAP) programme under the Aeronautics Research and Development Board, he helped establish aero-engine materials research programmes and advanced research infrastructure at academic institutions across the country.
An alumnus of PSG College of Technology, IIT Kanpur and the Indian Institute of Science, Dr Gopinath holds a BE, M.Tech and Ph.D in engineering and research disciplines, awarded in 1992, 1994 and 2009 respectively, the statement said.
