A drone filming the illuminated Nagoya City Hall headquarters crashed into a building across the road shortly before 9 p.m. on September 17, with police investigating whether the flight may have violated Japan’s Civil Aeronautics Act.
According to investigative sources, the drone was being used to film the Nagoya City Hall main building when it struck the West Building on the opposite side of the road.
The main building was illuminated that night in connection with the Asian Games, and the drone operator had been commissioned by Aichi Prefecture to capture footage of the display.
The collision reportedly occurred when the operator moved the drone backward in an attempt to obtain a wider shot.
Drone operators are required to submit a flight plan to the national government in advance, but investigators said no plan had been filed for the flight on the day of the accident.
Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the crash and the sequence of events leading up to it, including the possibility of a violation of the Civil Aeronautics Act.
