Legendary Hollywood star Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has opened up about discovering a painful lump on his testicle while showering, but didn’t tell his wife
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has opened up about finding a lump on his testicle. The legendary actor feared he was battling testicular cancer after finding the lump while showering.;
Just weeks ago, the actor was preparing to attend a promotional event for his film Jumanji when he noticed the painful mass. But while the 54-year-old had been hoping the pain would ease, the pain Johnson was feeling only worsened.
Despite enduring the pain in April, Dwayne was left feeling sick with worry that the lump on his left testicle would kill him off before his birthday. In a new interview, the actor explained that he didn’t tell his wife who he’s been married to for seven years and known for two decades.
Late on a Sunday evening, he phoned his doctor and the following morning, during an appointment, he was told it was likely to be epididymitis – inflammation of a tube around the back of a testicle, which stores sperm – but it could be cancerous.
The following morning, he went for an ultrasound scan due to his packed schedule. “I didn’t even tell Lauren,” he told Esquire. Johnson added: “I didn’t want to worry her before I knew if it was anything to even worry about.” However, Dwayne says that he is “fine”, but at the time, he didn’t know this.
While waiting for his ultrasound, he was in the midst of a promotional tour and said he had “to be on all day, joking around, making speeches,” despite the internal panic.
The NHS states that testicular cancer is most commonly discovered amongst men between the ages of 15 and 49. However, it can affect anybody with testicles. The severity of the condition depends on the type of cancer, how big it is and if the disease has spread.
While testicular cancer often only affects one testicle, it can affect both. Symptoms commonly include a lump or swelling on the testicle, the testicle getting bigger, an ache or pain in the testicle or scrotum, the scrotum feeling firm, hard or heavy.
Other symptoms can include back or lower abdominal pain, weight loss without trying, a cough, difficulty swallowing, and a sore or swollen chest. While there is no definitive answer as to what causes the condition, people are more likely to get testicular cancer if they have or have had undescended testicles, a brother or father has had it, if they have HIV or AIDS, or if a condition called hypospadias is not at the tip of the penis.
Treatment also varies, which can include surgery to remove the testicle, which can be replaced with an artificial testicle, or chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Dwayne has been a strong advocate for cancer awareness after his grandfather died from the disease at the age of just 45.
His mother, At, has also battled lung cancer. Speaking previously about his mother, Dwayne said: “This woman has survived lung cancer, tough marriage, head on collision with a drunk driver. She’s a survivor, in ways that make angels and miracles real.”
