The Philadelphia Eagles are bringing Zach Ertz back to the organization, signing the veteran tight end to their practice squad after Dallas Goedert suffered a sprained MCL in Sunday’s 24-20 Week 2 win over the Tennessee Titans.

The reunion gives Philadelphia an experienced option at a position already depleted by injuries to Goedert, Eli Stowers and Grant Calcaterra. The 13-year veteran pass catcher spent parts of nine seasons with the Eagles and caught the game-winning touchdown to secure Super Bowl LII.
NFL on ESPN took to its official X account Monday, posting a clip of former Eagles center Jason Kelce discussing why he welcomed the return of his longtime teammate after Goedert’s injury.

Ertz returns nearly five years after Philadelphia traded him to the Arizona Cardinals during the 2021 season. He later played for the Washington Commanders before becoming a free agent after tearing his ACL in Week 14 last year.

The 35-year-old has 825 career receptions for 8,592 yards. He caught 579 passes during his first Eagles tenure, leaving him 10 shy of Harold Carmichael’s franchise record of 589. Ertz also earned three Pro Bowl selections with Philadelphia from 2017 through 2019.
Goedert sustained an injury to his knee while blocking in the second quarter Sunday and played only 19 snaps, finishing with one catch for four yards. The MCL sprain is expected to keep him sidelined for several weeks.

Philadelphia already has Stowers and Calcaterra on injured reserve, leaving Johnny Mundt and EJ Jenkins as the healthy tight ends on the active roster. Ertz’s practice-squad deal gives the Eagles another option while Goedert recovers.

The 2-0 Eagles visit the 1-1 Chicago Bears on Monday, September 28, for a Week 3 clash, and Philadelphia could elevate Ertz for his first game back with the team.
