Saturday Night Live UK’s Amelia Dimoldenberg didn’t hold back in her fierce monologue, slamming Ed Sheeran as a “red-headed puppet”. The presenter took aim at the musician following the fallout from Macklemore being axed from his LOOP Tour for his Free Palestine speech.
The Chicken Shop Date host, 32, took control of presenting duties this week and couldn’t help but jump on the Ed pile on. Slamming his tearful speech on stage following events which was read from a teleprompter, Amelia said: “I’ve been incredibly privileged to have done so many interviews with people like Idris Elba, Cher, and even a world-famous, red-headed puppet with a hand up his a**e telling him what to say.”
It comes after Ed was seen clearly reading a pre-written speech at the start of his first show back since the fallout. He said: “I’ve had to take and make difficult decisions, and I am making mistakes and I’m so, so sorry for them.
“I don’t want to disappoint fans, and I’ve never wanted to be an activist musician, but this has put me in the middle of an important and passionate argument about freedom of speech and the most complex political issue on the planet.”
Ed added: “I have tried in my career not to be a political commentator of any kind because I want my music and shows to be about unity, not division, about humanity, not politics.”
“But this is a humanitarian issue, and I cannot hide about how I feel about it anymore. What happened in Israel and at the Nova music festival on October 7 was horrific and compounded centuries of Jewish pain.
“What is happening in Gaza is catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate. My heart has been broken by the scale of devastation and loss of civilian’s lives, children’s lives. And the systemic injustice we are seeing unfold in the West Bank cannot be overlooked.”
The outcry against Ed came as rapper Macklemore – real name Benjamin Haggerty – cried out “Free Palestine” on stage, which he claims led to him being removed from Ed’s tour.
During a performance at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey last week, the rapper said he wanted people in Gaza and the West Bank to know they had not been forgotten.
In support of the US rapper, all of Ed’s other support acts also pulled out of the tour, as did his band. After the decision, Ed had initially released a statement online saying he had no part in the removal of Macklemore.
He insisted it was the decision of the promoter. He said on Instagram at the time: “I am not complicit. I have my personal views on this devastating conflict.
“Just because I choose not to speak publicly, it doesn’t mean I don’t have them, and it doesn’t mean I don’t care. Nor does it mean I don’t support causes in my own personal way.”
Macklemore has since announced his Free Palestine tour which will kick off next month.
