Richard Osman has waded into Ed Sheeran’s troubles and believes that the singer feels it is ‘not useful for him’ to voice his opinion of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
Ed Sheeran will soon be ‘forced to pick a side’ amid the the Macklemore tour fallout, Richard Osman has warned.
The respected TV presenter and novelist has waded into the debate as the pressure grows on the singing superstar. The rapper’s pro-Palestine advocacy during the tour led to his removal, and the fall out has been severe, with the decision prompting all of his support acts to quit.
Ed Sheeran’s family have begun to bite back after the singing superstar’s claims they had “abandoned” him, telling the crowd in in Philadelphia that he felt “so much love” from the audience – but said that support wasn’t forthcoming from others closer to him.
The unhappy cousin of the under-fire artist hasn’t held back in his criticism of the singer saying on social media that he is a ‘selfish individual with malicious, cunning ways’ – and Richard thinks the time is fast approaching for the Shape Of You hitmaker to come to a decision.
Speaking on The Rest is Entertainment podcast, he said: “Ed Sheeran is not an idiot, he knows his audience, and it’s a huge mainstream audience.
“They understand the position they are in and the impact of what they do, or the lack of impact. If he has taken the view that it is not useful for him to do that, do you know what he is allowed to do that.
“But he finds himself now in the situation where he has to come down on one side and it will be fascinating to see.”
Richard is unsure if the show can go on and added: “The tour is on-going, they are going to need to make a decision quickly.
“Does Ed at any point say ‘no I am sticking by Macklemore?’ Does he sit down with him over a drink a few days later and say ‘sorry, it was a really difficult position for me’ – but the fact they have all dropped out means it’s not something Ed can just get over.”
As the backlash continues over Macklemore’s removal from the singer’s Loop Tour, his cousin, the British musician Jethro Sheeran, has publicly condemned the hitmaker after he broke his silence over the fall-out this weekend.
Jethro, the son of John Sheeran, Ed’s father’s brother, has hit out and accused him of behaving selfishly toward both his own family and his fellow artists.
In a series of posts, his cousin wrote alongside a throwback snap of them together: “You can’t silence me! Ed Sheeran is a coward !! I’m embarrassed about this photo but it’s 10 years old!”
Jethro has also alleged that he supported the star early in his music career but later felt mistreated professionally and also financially. “He is shady and he’s dropped Macklemore himself I believe 100% he’s a coward,” Jethro fumed.
“In my opinion, he’s a bad human. Just my opinion from my experiences. I’ve known him all my life and started him in music, took him on my stage,” he added. “Took him to my first studio, rapped on his early songs, and did all I could to help him.
“Even when he was bullied at school. He only cared about himself, and he puts out fake narrative[s] that are calculated just to keep everyone happy so he can do big private gigs and keep brand deals.”
He concluded his message this weekend by distancing the rest of the family from his performer. “That’s my honest opinion, and I’m family!! He’s not a true Sheeran! Don’t hate on a Sheeran because of this silly little boy.”
