Editor’s Review: Dolce&Gabbana make time stand still with their SS27 show

Look at any of Hollywood’s leading ladies these days and it’s hard not to feel like time has stood still for most of them. From Demi Moore and Michelle Pfeiffer to Halle Berry, Julia Roberts, and Jennifer Lopez — who was sitting front and centre at the Dolce&Gabbana SS27 show in Milan — the argument that age is more about a state of mind than a birth date really resonates.

So when designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana made the case that generational dressing — the mixing of pieces from the wardrobes of grandmothers, mothers, and aunties — was the most modern thing a woman could do in this day and age, it was difficult to disagree with them. Especially as they deftly proved their point with an eclectic collection that pulled designs from the brand’s own sartorial touchstones that span over 40 years and still remain relevant.

This meant lace dresses made in Cordonetto or Taormina style, inspired by the designer’s beloved Sicily. Boldly bejewelled denim jeans and jackets that looked to be covered in a grandmother’s brooches. Animal print was also in the mix, on coats, jackets, and, of course, corset and slip dress looks. There were also the brand’s classic flowing flower-print dresses in tiers of easy ruffles, and their more-is-more approach to accessories and embellishments was most definitely in full effect.

It all made for an uninhibited cacophony of a collection. A true melting pot of all of the brand’s touchstone styles mixed and layered together in an expression of unapologetic individuality. The designer duo wanted to prove that it is still very possible to raid a relative’s wardrobe and come up with a look that makes the past modern, simply in the way each woman decides to pull it all together. Or as the voiceover on the video that played at the start of the show succinctly put it, “Today, true extravagance is to be unrepeatable.” At Dolce&Gabbana, the trick to being one-of-a-kind seems to be never forgetting where you came from, and then leverage that into something singularly your own.
