BHUBANESWAR, June 21: An elderly couple was found dead at their residence in Odisha’s Puri district, police said on Sunday, with preliminary investigations pointing to a suspected case of suicide.
The deceased were identified as Anam Mishra and his wife, Sangita Mishra, residents of the Senapati Bagicha area under Talabania police limits.
According to police, the couple was found hanging from a ceiling fan inside their house on Saturday. Family members and local residents alerted the police after discovering the bodies.
The deaths have shocked the neighbourhood, with residents claiming that the couple had been under considerable mental stress for some time. Some locals alleged that concerns over their son’s alleged drug addiction had been a source of distress for the family, although police have not officially confirmed any motive.
A police team from Talabania Police Station reached the spot and launched an investigation. The bodies were sent to the District Headquarters Hospital in Puri for post-mortem examination.
Police have detained the couple’s son for questioning and are examining all possible circumstances surrounding the incident. Officials said the exact reason behind the deaths would be established after completion of the investigation and receipt of the post-mortem report.
Further details are awaited.
