THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Eminent scholar and head of Narayana Gurukula, Varkala Swami Muni Narayana Prasad passed away owing to age related ailments at a private hospital here on Saturday. He was 87.
The highly respected scholar of Sree Narayana Guru’s teachings and philosophy, Swami came into contact with the Narayana Gurukula movement in 1955 and went on to become its head in 1999.
Muni Narayana Prasad was a prolific writer in Malayalam and English. He won the Kerala Sahitya Akedemi award in 2015 for Nataraja Guru’s commentary on Shankaracharya’s “Soundaryalahiri” and again in 2018 for his autobiography “Atmayanam”.
He was conferred Padma Shri in 2024.
Muni Narayana Prasad was born in Nagaroor in Thiruvananthapuram district on December 9, 1938.
He started his career as a civil engineer with rhe public works department.
However, he left the job because of his inclination towards spirituality and philosophical matters.
Nataraja Guru conferred him with Bramhacharya diksha in 1970 and Sanyasa diksha was given by Nitya Chaitanya Yati in 1985.
He traveled widely across the globe and spoke at various international fora on religious and spiritual matters.
Muni Narayana Prasad took part in the world religious leaders meet in Moscow in February 1987.
Prominent persons from all walks of life paid rich tributes to Muni Narayana Prasad.
Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar said Swami ji’s life was a depiction of Sree Narayana Guru’s teachings and recollected his invaluable contributions to society.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said Muni Narayana Prasad imbibed the teachings of Sree Narayana Guru and in his death the state has lost an eminent scholar and teacher.
Opposition Leader V D Satheeshan, CPM state secretary M V Govindan and CPI state secretary Binoy Viswam expressed deep condolences over the death of Muni Narayana Prasad.
