Emmerdale icon Charley Webb shared her candid thoughts on sexuality during an appearance on a new podcast
Charley Webb has shared her thoughts on sexuality during a new podcast. The Emmerdale actress has been in the public eye for decades thanks to her iconic role as Debbie Dingle in the ITV soap, before her exit in 2021.
In that time, she was married to former co-star Matthew Wolfenden, who she shares three children with. The former couple went their separate ways in 2023 but vowed to remain close for the sake of their brood, Buster, Bowie and Ace.
Following their split, the 38-year-old has remained tight-lipped over her love life but, during an appearance on the Live, Laugh, Luke podcast, she spoke candidly about bisexuality.
While reacting to listener confessions, the soap legend discussed one from a fan who questioned whether they were bisexual after “getting with a girl at work”.
When host Luke Hamnett asked if she “could relate”, she replied: “I mean … yeah. If that’s the way that you want to go, I just think everybody should just totally be who they are. I have no issue with anybody being with anyone. It’s all about the vibes, it’s all about the energy, do what you want.
“I actually think so many girls vibe with a girl, and maybe it’s less extreme than two guys. I just think [it’s] because girls relate so well to each other.”
Luke then suggested that “everyone is a bit bi”, to which Charley agreed: “I 100% have said this. I do wonder if it is more of a girl thing than a guy thing. My brother [Jamie Lomas] is so straight.
“But also, it’s this thing of it being something that you have to discuss, this coming out thing. It’s like, what are you talking about? What do you mean coming out?
“You’re dating a girl or you’re dating a guy, you’re not coming out – well, they are, but it shouldn’t be a thing. Just do what you want. That is something that has to be gone, it has to be gone.”
Elsewhere during the wide-ranging chat, the mum-of-three touched on her close friendship with fellow actress Sheridan Smith, after growing closer to the Gavin and Stacey star in the wake of her marriage ending.
She explained that they first met through the industry a long time ago, but it wasn’t until they bumped into each other again “a few years” later that they became pally.
It was thought that the pair had a falling out last year when they appeared to unfollow one another on social media, but Charley insisted that they are still as close as ever.
“We’ve literally just been inseparable ever since,” she said. “I was working in London and we just ended up spending so much time together. I just see her all the time. Because I have the kids one week on, one week off, I just end up hanging out with her.
“We spend so much time together, we’re always together. We can lay on the bed and not speak for an hour and I’m like, ‘Oh s***, I forgot you were there. We’re just scrolling on Instagram.”
“We are really different in our personalities, I would say, but it just really works,” she added. “We can have like two hours of chat, or be so talkative and laughing – we laugh so much – but then we can have our quiet time.
“I don’t need any social battery.”
