Karimnagar:What was initially being passed as a case of suicide of an engineering student turned out to be case of murder, police said after arresting two persons on Sunday.
Peddapalli DCP B. Ram Reddy announced the arrest of lecturer Jetti Naveen Kumar, who allegedly tried to proposition the student, for the murder, and Bommakanti Ravi Kumar who is under investigation for alleged sexual abuse. The DCP said Naveen Kumar had forced her to accuse Ravi Kumar of sexual abuse.
Police said the victim had developed friendship with contract lecturer Naveen Kumar while doing her mining diploma course in Singareni Collieries Polytechnic College, CCC Naspur of Mancherial district, in 2022. Naveen Kumar, who was separated from his wife, reportedly tried to proffer love to the student.
After completing the diploma course, she moved to Hyderabad to complete her engineering course in Osmania University. She recently returned to the Singareni mines at Godavarikhani (GDK) as part of her training. Unable to digest this, Naveen Kumar decided to kill the student, police alleged. As part of his plan, he allegedly mixed pesticide in a water bottle, picked up the student in his car at FCI crossing while she was returning home after finishing her duties on September 12.
While driving around, he entered into an argument with her regarding her friendship with Ravi Kumar and forced her to write a note stating that she had decided to die by suicide as she was sexually abused by the employee.
Police said Naveen Kumar forcefully made the student drink the pesticide-laced water. When she fell unconscious, he called her parents from her mobile phone, picked up her parents from their home at about 7.30 pm and drove them to the Godavarikhani area hospital, where she was admitted, and escaped. The student died the next day, September 13, while undergoing treatment.
Based on a complaint by her parents, Godavarikhani Town-I police began investigations and traced the case by analysing technical evidence. The DCP said the allegation that Ravi Kumar had sexually abused the student was being investigation. The student’s complaint accusing SCCL officials of negligence in taking action was also being investigated, DCP Ram Reddy said.
