Chennai: The AIADMK, which might present a picture of an edifice down in the dumps due to the recent defections of some top leaders from the party, is showing signs of a revival as the general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, without being bogged down by the setbacks, is out to put back the party on the tracks through a series of review meetings at the party’s district level.
Into the second week of the long drawn process since there are 84 party districts, office bearers of Erode East, Erode West, Thiruvallur East and Thiruvallur West districts met Palaniswami on Wednesday when he elicited the views of party functionaries as part of the post mortem on the recent electoral debacle that primarily triggered the exodus to the ruling TVK in large numbers.
He has already completed the discussions with party leaders from 34 districts when he made a bid to instil hope in the minds of the functionaries by telling them that though some top level leaders and middle level functionaries have left, the people who voted for the party continued to be loyal.
Once the dust raised by the storming of the political citadel by the TVK settled down, the AIADMK would return to its original self and would be able to recoup and fight the elections with its quintessential vim and vigour, he told the party leaders.
Urging them to start the work immediately without waiting for the calling of elections – whether It is the by-elections to the seats vacated by AIADMK MLAs or the regular polls to the local bodies – Palaniswami dispelled the rumours that there was a clandestine move to form a coalition between the DMK and AIADMK to prevent the TVK from coming to power.
Since it was that charge of the AIADMK planning to align with the DMK that was cited as the reason for deserting the party by many of those who switched over to the TVK, the party general secretary has been denying it in all the review meetings with district level office-bearers.
Once he was through with the remaining 34 party districts, Palaniswami would call for an executive committee meeting of the AIADMK to ratify his decisions and then convene the general council, which has been the demand of many leaders opposed to his leadership.
After consolidating his position in the party, Palaniswami would take on the TVK and also the DMK with a view to wooing the voters and winning the next general elections, sources in the party said.
Already the undeclared moratorium on criticizing the TVK has been quietly lifted as the recent statements of party honchos like D Jayakumar, R B Udhayakumar and Palaniswamy against the government indicated, they pointed out.
So, party sources said, the AIADMK would boldly come out of what is perceived to be a sulk and go for an aggressive political fight, hoping the TVK’s honeymoon with the people would soon be over and that the field would be open for it.
