Vijayawada: The Election Commission on Friday stressed the need for a healthy and error-free electoral roll to strengthen the democratic system and ensure voting rights for every eligible citizen.

ECI secretaries Santosh Kumar Dubey and Naveen Kumar said the special intensive revision (SIR) process was being carried out in a transparent and systematic manner with the objective of preparing flawless voter lists by removing ineligible entries and including all eligible voters.

Addressing a preparatory and review meeting at the School of Planning and Architecture auditorium in Vijayawada, the officials said electoral registration officers (EROs), assistant EROs, booth-level officers (BLOs) and BLO supervisors have a crucial role in successfully implementing the programme at the grassroots level.

Officials reviewed the preparedness, staff training, meetings with political parties, printing and distribution of Enumeration Forms (EFs), polling station rationalisation and voter mapping. Preparatory activities for the revision exercise will be held from June 5 to 14, followed by a door-to-door survey by BLOs from June 15 to July 14.

The draft electoral roll will be published on July 21, while claims and objections will be accepted till August 20. The final voters’ list will be published on September 22 after disposal of claims.

The meeting was attended by ECI under secretary Sheesh Ram, additional CEO of the state CEO office A Venkateswara Rao, NTR district collector Lakshmisha and election officials from NTR, Krishna, Eluru, Guntur, Palnadu and Bapatla districts.

Dubey said the exercise aimed at deleting names of deceased persons, permanently migrated voters and duplicate entries while ensuring inclusion of all eligible citizens. He directed BLOs to visit every household and distribute enumeration forms besides keeping Forms 6, 7 and 8 readily available during the survey process.

Naveen Kumar advised officials to ensure utmost accuracy and complete the exercise within the stipulated time frame without any errors.

Additional CEO Venkateswara Rao said polling station rationalisation was being undertaken to avoid inconvenience to voters following district reorganisation. Help desk number 1950 had been made available for public assistance.
