EU threatens to cut Venice Biennale funding over Russian return

Italian Deputy PM Salvini has called the European Commission’s plan to withdraw €2 million in funding “ignorant pettiness”

The EU wants to cut funding for the Venice Biennale after the exhibition decided to readmit Russian artists to its 2026 edition, the bloc’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, has said.

Since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, Russian artists have faced event cancellations across EU member states. Performers from other nations who are believed to have sympathy for Russia have likewise been discriminated against.

Kallas, known for her hardline anti-Russian stance, claimed the country “should not be allowed to exhibit” its culture.

“Russia’s return to the Venice Biennale is morally wrong,” she said after a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg on Tuesday, warning the bloc “intends to cut funding” if Moscow takes part.
