LaLiga: Mourinho moaning

Raphinha has been busy backing Lamine Yamal to win the Ballon d’Or but it is tough to explain the Brazilian forward taking second billing to anyone right now. After scoring a hat-trick in midweek, he followed up with another in Barcelona’s 3-1 win at Sevilla.

This was a perfect hat-trick – right foot, header, left foot – and further underlined the fact that Raphinha is far from out of position up front. At 29, this is a player belatedly finding his true calling. The variety of his goals proves that Raphinha can now do it all.

Barca are in irresistible form and are already five points clear of second and six ahead of Real Madrid after Jose Mourinho’s side lost the derby to Atletico on Sunday. After an unusually subdued return to life in LaLiga, we are now getting the full Mourinho.

The criticism of the appointed referee began in a veiled way beforehand and was rather more obvious after the 2-1 defeat. Mourinho accused Miguel Angel Ortiz Arias of not handling the pressure and even brought printouts to the press conference.

He talked of “two clear red cards” and those familiar with Cristian Romero’s career will perhaps feel that he had a point regarding the Atletico defender’s follow-through on Jude Bellingham, although the stills of that looked rather worse than the real-time replays.

“The ones who should be really happy are the referee appointment committee because everything was very strange,” Mourinho went on to complain. “They assign a referee who at 41 has never been an international referee so it’s clearly not because he’s a great referee.”

The dark hints at conspiracies against his team are nothing new with Mourinho. But they cannot mask the evidence of a gulf to Barcelona that shows little sign of closing. As against Betis, when faced with quality opposition Real Madrid have been found wanting.

In the other games, Celta were big winners, putting five past Racing. But there is still no joy for Valencia after sacking Carlos Corberan. The final goal of the weekend in LaLiga was a vicious hit by La Real’s Ander Barrenetxea to stun Mestalla in stoppage time.

Bundesliga: More Kane history

Harry Kane reached another milestone in Bayern Munich’s seven-goal rout of Union Berlin. The England captain hit the century mark with the first of his two goals in what was only his 98th Bundesliga appearance. Nobody has made it to three figures so fast.

As has so often been the case during Kane’s time at Bayern, the best player on the pitch was actually Michael Olise. He scored three and set up Kane’s second in another classy outing. Kane is tipped for the Ballon d’Or but his team-mate surely cannot be far behind.

Elsewhere, there was yet more woe for Borussia Monchengladbach as they came out on the wrong side of a seven-goal thriller against Mainz. Augsburg were beaten for the first time at Werder Bremen and Freiburg lost their 100 per cent record at Eintracht Frankfurt.

That means the only team yet to drop a point in the Bundesliga are Borussia Dortmund. Maxi Beier scored the winner away to Stuttgart with substitute Jobe Bellingham helping to make the difference by providing the assist for what was the only goal of the game.

It was a difficult day for the Dortmund coach Niko Kovac, who was told on air after the game about the passing of Peter Hermann, his former assistant manager at Bayern, aged 74. Fighting back tears during the interview, it was impossible not to feel for him.

But what a job he is doing. There are clear signs of progress at Dortmund. They have won all six of their matches in all competitions and have more clean sheets than Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga since the summer of 2025. Stay solid and they have a chance.

Serie A: Amorim adapts – and wins!

Inter showed their remarkable powers of recovery yet again as they came from two goals behind against Roma to earn a point that preserves their unbeaten record. The Italian champions have now conceded the first two goals in their last four matches.

They had actually won the previous two of them in Serie A. Here, that man Lautaro Martinez scored twice to prevent Roma staying perfect. Mark of champions? Perhaps. But the signs are that it could be an exciting title race in Italy with four teams still undefeated.

Among them are AC Milan as Ruben Amorim bounced back from defeat in Europe by doing what he was never willing to do at Manchester United and tweaking his formation. Milan operated with a back four in the build-up against Lecce and won the game 3-0.

The shift was not so seismic, a fluid formation that saw Mario Gila move to right-back, giving Samuel Chukwueze more freedom to attack ahead of him, but it was enough for Amorim to note the change. “I cannot make the same mistakes,” he admitted.

“What I felt in the last games is the same that I felt at Manchester United,” Amorim explained afterwards. “Sometimes we do not have the perfect characteristics to play in that way and if we do not have it then we have to adapt.” An epiphany. Better late than never.

Elsewhere, Billy Gilmour scored for Napoli and a word too for another British player enjoying himself in Italy. Harry Winks suffered back-to-back relegations with Leicester but has started every game for Cagliari this season as they made it four wins from five.

Ligue 1: Rosenior’s message

It took until the ninth and final game of the weekend in Ligue 1 for the run of home victories to come to an end as Paris Saint-Germain went to the Velodrome and beat rivals Marseille 2-1 in the big one on Sunday. Marquinhos scored the winner for PSG.

Although this was a spirited effort, it is four defeats in five games now for Marseille, their worst start to a Ligue 1 season. PSG remain oddly wasteful – they missed seven big chances in this game – but a third win in a row hints at the European champions finding form.

Nevertheless, the top team in the capital right now is managed by Liam Rosenior not Luis Enrique. The English coach certainly savoured Paris FC’s 2-1 win over his former club Strasbourg, pointedly celebrating in front of the visiting fans and sparking ugly scenes.

“A small part of the supporters, and I emphasise, a small part of them, because Strasbourg is a fantastic club, were disrespectful,” Rosenior explained afterwards. “They insulted my family. So for me, celebrating like that, obviously it was a message.”

Rosenior’s side remain unbeaten, with the best defensive record in France in terms of goals conceded and expected goals conceded. It is Monaco that go into the break on top, though, and there was a first win of the campaign for Nice against Lille.

Mohamed Salah scored a hat-trick for Trabzonspor against Galatasaray in a sensational result on Saturday. It was a first defeat of the league season for the reigning champions and came in emphatic fashion as Salah inspired a 4-0 win – getting an assist too.

The most striking thing was Salah’s sharpness, racing through from his own half for the first and last goals of the game. In between, Davinson Sanchez’s error gifted him the other as Salah outshone Rafael Leao. He now has seven goals in six league games.

The team topping the Super Lig, however, is newly promoted Amedspor. To say the side with strong ties to the Kurdish population is causing a stir would be an understatement. Gift Orban’s monster hit from distance set them on the path to a 3-2 win over Besiktas.

On Sunday evening, it was an enjoyable experience to attend O Classico as Porto defeated Benfica 3-1 at the Estadio do Dragao. Marco Silva has undoubtedly improved Benfica and they played some good football before Clement Lenglet was sent off.

But Porto punished them, despite Silva’s side briefly pulling level with 10 men. The win means that the title holders have seven wins from seven games now and already boast a five-point lead at the top of the table in Portugal. Francesco Farioli delivering again.
