A star of Eurovision, who represented the United Kingdom with a performance that ultimately landed at the bottom of the leaderboard, is planning to quit music alotgether

Mae Muller has candidly discussed her plans to quit music for good. The singer, 28, rose to prominence when she was selected to represent the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2023.

Her performance followed the barnstorming success of Sam Ryder, who placed second the year before with his signature track Space Man, and whilst Ukraine won then, the UK ended up hosting the competition due to the conflict there.

This left Mae to take to the stage in Liverpool with her track I Wrote A Song, and the evening consisted of performances from previous entrant Sonia, as well as tributes to other Liverpool-born acts like The Beatles and Spice Girls star Melanie C. But in a stark contrast to the events that unfolded in 2022, she placed second-to-last with just 24 points.

Six months later, Mae released her debut album Sorry I’m Late with Capitol Records and promoted it with performances on programmes like The Graham Norton Show but it ultimately charted at number 33.

She then parted ways with her record label to become an independent artist and her most recent release, a single titled Tell You That, in April – but has now told fans that she plans to leave music behind.

Mae, whose aunt is the music video director Sophie Muller and has worked with megastars like Annie Lennox, Kylie Minogue and Beyoncé, took to TikTok to explain things.

She said: “I’m just gonna be vulnerable for a second because you guys are my close friends, this is literally my close friends. This music thing, I need you guys to tell me not to quit because why is it so hard.

“I feel like I’ve been doing it for so long now and I just feel like all the joy and fun has been sucked out and it’s kind of making me miserable.”

Mae begged her fans to tell her not to quit the music industry because she still has a passion for all things performing but, at this stage, doesn’t know if she has the impetus to keep going.

She added: “I don’t know guys, I need you guys to remind me why I like doing this cos I absolutely love ya’ll, I love you, I love making music, I love performing, I love everything about it but I just feel like what it’s turned into, I don’t know if I have it in me guys.

“I do have it in me but I’m getting to the end of my tether and I don’t wanna be miserable, I wanna be happy. Tell me not to quit. I don’t wanna quit on you guys, but it’s testing my last nerve, I can’t.”

Alongside her musical efforts, Mae has also embarked on an acting career, and played the part of Kelly in the 2023 film Gassed Up. She then voiced the role of Prancer in the 2024 festive film The Night Before Christmas in Wonderland, which also featured Gerard Butler, Emilia Clarke and Bridgerton star Simone Ashley.

Mae’s time on Eurovision was slightly marred during the build-up when it emerged that, some years previously, she stated in a tweet that she “hated the UK,” as she shared an opinion on the government that was in power at that time.

But Mae later doubled-down her her opinion during the build-up to the competition, and wasn’t worried about what her fellow Brits thought of her because they were unable to vote for her during Eurovision anyway.

Asked if she regretted her tweets, she said: “No, because that’s how I felt. I do, though, regret people taking them out of context. Me saying, ‘I hate this country’ is not ideal as I am representing this country.

Speaking to The Sunday Times, she added: “[The BBC] didn’t make me scrub my personality. It made me think how lucky I am that I was born in a place where I can give my opinion. A lot of people who did have a problem with what I said were from the UK.

“They said, ‘You’ve lost my vote.’ Well, you can’t vote for me anyway. A lot of young women follow me and it’s important that they see they can have a voice.”
