Chennai: Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Tuesday expressed optimism following the recently concluded Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, asserting that “victory is certain” and that even in defeat, there is no failure. In a post on X, he quoted poet Bharathiyar, reinforcing confidence within the party despite the evolving political situation.
Meanwhile, cracks within the INDIA alliance have come to the fore, with the long-standing partnership between the Congress and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) appearing to be under strain. The tension escalated after Congress extended its support to a government led by Vijay in the state.
Reacting sharply, DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai criticised the Congress, calling its decision “short-sighted” and accusing it of “backstabbing” alliance partners. He warned that the move could damage trust in the Congress ahead of the 2029 general elections and weaken Opposition unity against the BJP.
Sources said the Congress unanimously decided to support the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) after it emerged as the single largest party in the 2026 Assembly elections with 108 seats, falling 10 short of the majority mark in the 234-member House.
The decision followed a late-night virtual meeting chaired by Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K Selvaperunthagai, where party MLAs and senior leaders deliberated on the political scenario and the implications of aligning with TVK.
With Congress holding five seats, and smaller parties such as PMK (4), CPI, CPI(M), and VCK (two each) in contention, additional support is expected to help TVK stake claim to form the government.
The development signals a significant political shift in Tamil Nadu and could have wider ramifications at the national level, especially within the INDIA bloc, where Congress and the M. K. Stalin-led DMK have been key allies.
