Pedro Neto struck twice during the second half as Chelsea moved fourth in the Premier League and ended Everton’s unbeaten start to the top-flight season with victory at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Portugal winger Neto pounced within seconds of the restart to put the Blues ahead following Morgan Rogers’ backheel to allow Jorrel Hato to cross from the left, then repeated the trick after Cole Palmer’s free-kick hit Everton’s defensive wall and dropped kindly in the 90th minute.
Moises Caicedo hammered a shot against the woodwork from distance during the first half and visiting goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was stretchered off after Neto’s first goal following a collision with Toffees Jarrad Branthwaite, leading to 11 minutes of added time being played.
Everton vs Chelsea: Blues’ ‘cutting edge’ pays
Everton had drawn four and won two of their first six matches and pushed Chelsea hard for much of a combative contest, including five bookings during the first 34 minutes.
Jack Grealish had a first-half shot tipped over the bar by Martinez, who reportedly went to hospital after being replaced by Mike Penders.
Former England defender Stuart Pearce called the game “even-ish”. “Chelsea just had that little bit more cutting edge in general play,” Pearce told TalkSport.
