Everton 3-1 Newcastle: Report, result and goals as Toffees reach last eight in Carabao Cup

Everton produced a dominant display to see off Newcastle and set up a Carabao Cup quarter-final tie against League Two side Fleetwood.

David Moyes’ preparations were hampered by him leaving out former England man Jack Grealish for a “breach of club discipline”.

But the threadbare Toffees marched on to an emphatic win in front of a passionate crowd perhaps now dreaming of some long overdue success.

The Magpies ended their 70-year trophy drought by winning this competition in 2025, while Everton have not lifted a trophy at all since the 1995 FA Cup.

The Toffees have never won the League Cup, perhaps surprisingly, and will fancy their chances this year as the draw opens up.

Everton progress to a quarter-final away to fourth-tier Fleetwood Town, who won at home on penalties against reigning Premier League champions Arsenal on Tuesday following a 1-1 draw.

They took the lead when James Garner steered in clinically from the edge of the area, before summer signing Hayden Hackney burst into the area to convert a cushioned volley for his first goal for the club.

And Thierno Barry made it three after the break with a composed finish after fine approach play from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

Newcastle had their moments throughout the second half, mustering 28 shots on goal, but could not find a way past Jordan Pickford until the 88th minute.

Dan Burn, who scored in the Magpies’ final win last year, climbed brilliantly to head in and give the travelling thousands something to celebrate.
