  • Five of the goals came after the 76th minute on that occasion, starting with two by Newcastle’s Kieron Dyer. Alessandro Pistone put Newcastle ahead in the 100th minute but David Unsworth’s 112th minute led to the shootout
  • Everton have won one of their last four home matches against Newcastle as part of a run bookended by 4-1 defeats last season and in April 2023

  • Their best runs in the competition have been two appearances in the final, losing 3-2 to Aston Villa after extra time in 1976/77 and 1-0 to Liverpool in 1983/84
  • Toffees legend Dixie Dean is the 20-goal top scorer in the history of the fixture, nine ahead of Newcastle’s Hughie Gallacher

Do EFL Cup quarter final ties go to extra time, replays and penalties?

Should they finish level after 90 minutes, EFL Cup ties go straight to penalties until the semi-finals, which take place over two legs.

If the scoreline is level after the second leg, extra time and – if necessary – penalties are used to separate teams.

The final is a one-off match at Wembley Stadium, with extra time and penalties used if required.
