‘Every Year After’ Fame, Aurora Perrineau Breaks Silence On Similarities To ‘Summer I Turned Pretty’

Every Year After that is streaming now on the OTT giant, Amazon Prime Video, is currently dominating the headlines for both good and bad reasons. Ever since its release, fans can’t stop talking about it, due to its engaging narrative and the powerful performances by the lead actors. However, a few netizens expressed disappointment over it by pointing out the similarities between the recently released show and the blockbuster series, The Summer I Turned Pretty. Well now, the cast of Every Year After has addressed the same.

Recently, the cast of the recently released show, Every Year After had a conversation with Us Weekly, during which they addressed the similarities with the blockbuster series, The Summer I Turned Pretty, which was released in 2022, on Amazon Prime Video. Aurora Perrineau, who portrays the role of ‘Chantal’ in the show addressed the ongoing debate on social media and explained:

“I think it has the same yearning as The Summer I Turned Pretty, but I think it’s really not a love triangle. I don’t think it’s a love triangle. I think, also, it’s just a bit more adult, because it’s about adults.”

Further, Aurora Perrineau also shared her thoughts on the plot of Every Year After and shared that it mainly explores the conversations of forgiveness between ‘Sam’ (played by Matt Cornett and ‘Percy’ (played by Sadie Soverall). She also explained that the audience might be able to relate with the plot as there are chances everybody may have felt the same emotion in their lives. She was quoted as saying:

“I think it’s something that a lot of people — maybe not in the exact scenario have dealt with — but it is that thing of trying to understand how to forgive people and if you can. I think that that’s something that people will attach to.”

The plotline of Every Year After

Every Year After is a romantic show, which is based on the bestselling novel, Every Summer After, by Carley Fortune. The storyline follows ‘Percy’, who returns to her town after a long time. Her return brings back memories of her first love, ‘Sam’. Further, the show moves between two different timelines- one of ‘Percy’ revisiting those memories and the other of ‘Percy’ and ‘Sam’ in their teenage years, when they were in love.

However, the major conflict comes when ‘Percy’ gets involved with ‘Sam’s’ brother, ‘Charlie’. Even though ‘Percy’ and ‘Sam’s’ relationship has ended, the involvement of ‘Charlie’ increases tensions. It is worth mentioning that despite this, the series does not fully focus on a love triangle, like The Summer I Turned Pretty. Recently, the author of the novel, Carley Fortune also spoke about the debate regarding similarities and said:

“It’s not about a person choosing between other people. That’s what a love triangle is, when there is equal kind of tension in the triangle. It’s just not what it is. I think the show is very much about important places and those people and places that stay with us for many, many years. It’s about coming home. It’s about how we grow and we evolve, but the younger versions of ourselves are always with us. I think it’s very tender.”
