Exclusive: âœGrew Up Inspired By Ilaiyaraaja AR Rahmanâ – GV Prakash Kumar On His 3rd National Award

G V Prakash Kumar has added another National Film Award to his growing list of honours. The composer won Best Music Direction (Background Music) at the 72nd National Film Awards for his work on Amaran, marking his third consecutive National Film Award. He was previously honoured for the background score of Soorarai Pottru at the 68th National Film Awards and for the songs of Vaathi at the 71st National Film Awards.

Amaran, directed by Rajkumar Periasamy and starring Sivakarthikeyan and Sai Pallavi, was among the major winners at this year’s National Film Awards. Periasamy won Best Director for the film, while G V Prakash was recognised specifically for its background music.
Speaking to Filmfare after the win, Prakash described the moment as both emotional and humbling. He said, “Winning my third National Award for Amaran is an incredibly emotional and humbling moment for me. I am deeply grateful to the jury and the selection committee, to the entire cast and crew, my musicians, my sound engineer, my family, my team and, above all, my listeners and fans who have stood by me through every phase of my journey.”

He then recalled growing up listening to and drawing inspiration from composers Ilaiyaraaja and A R Rahman, making this latest recognition particularly meaningful. He said, “To receive this honour for the third time is something I can only see as a blessing. I grew up being inspired by legends like Ilaiyaraaja sir and AR Rahman sir, and to have my own journey recognised alongside the incredible legacy of Indian music is something that makes me extremely grateful.”

Looking back at the year, Prakash said the response to his work across films including Youth, Irumudi, Happy Raj, Vishwanath & Sons and Mandaadi had made the period especially rewarding. He also pointed to his acting journey with The Immortal as another reason the year has felt significant.

“2026 has truly been a blockbuster year and one of the most blessed phases of my journey so far. The love and response to my music in the films like Youth, Irumudi, Happy Raj, Vishwanath & Sons and Mandaadi has been incredibly overwhelming. At the same time, my journey as an actor with The Immortal has made this year even more special. To have a year where both my music and acting journeys have received such warmth, and to now celebrate the third National Award, makes 2026 a truly memorable and deeply fulfilling chapter of my life,” he said.

Prakash’s latest win also adds another chapter to his long association with National Film Awards. “This is not just a celebration of my third National Award; it is a celebration of everyone who has walked this journey with me. I am excited, emotional and, most importantly, grateful. I hope the best is still yet to come,” Prakash signed off.
