Arabella Olivia Clark takes on the central role of Bela in Other Mommy, the upcoming supernatural horror film directed by Rob Savage and based on Josh Malerman’s bestselling novel Incidents Around the House. The film follows eight-year-old Bela as she encounters a sinister entity that emerges from her closet and takes the form of her mother, played by Jessica Chastain in a dual role.

For Clark, who has previously appeared in The Housemaid and The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, the opportunity meant stepping into the lead of a major horror film alongside Chastain, Jay Duplass and an ensemble cast that includes Dichen Lachman, Arian Moayed and Karen Allen.

“I knew I wanted to be Bela from the first audition through the final audition five months later,” Clark said. She read the script twice during the audition process, but that only made her want to know more about the story. Her mother eventually ordered Malerman’s novel for her, and Clark read that as well.

Clark said, “This was really my unicorn of a film role.”

Other Mommy, produced by James Wan and made through Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, is set to release in theatres on October 9.

The film comes from Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, with James Wan serving as producer. Rob Savage, known for films including Host and The Boogeyman, directs a screenplay by Nathan Elston, based on Malerman’s bestselling novel Incidents Around the House. The book itself is told from Bela’s perspective, with the young girl gradually confronting the increasingly threatening presence she calls Other Mommy.
