F1 fans spotted McLaren’s Halo winglet flexing in onboard videos from Austin and Mexico, and some question whether it exploits the rules.

Back in Canada, McLaren brought several updates to the MCL40. They included a winglet on the Halo in order to improve the airflow around the cockpit and also the central engine cover. Its functionality didn’t come to light until now.

F1 fans shared onboard videos from Mexico and Austin to highlight how it functioned. It opened ever so slightly on the straights and closed in the corners, which is very difficult to spot with the naked eye.

DRS-Like Movement of Winglet on the Halo Device

The movement of the winglet on top of the Halo is minimal, and McLaren is still running it this late in the F1 season. The use of the Halo in this manner could be questioned by rival teams, considering it is a safety device.

The FIA has allowed F1 teams to use fairings for better airflow, but has refrained from larger changes. Over the years, there have been different solutions without any major regulations being broken. But a DRS-like use of the Halo could be questioned.

So far, there has been no indication of any protest from F1 teams. Mind you, any addition of this nature to the Halo has to meet the FIA’s regulations, and so McLaren should have passed the test before putting it on the car.

McLaren Will Bring More Upgrades in Brazil

It remains to be seen how F1 teams will react to this. McLaren, meanwhile, will continue on the development path in this weekend’s Brazilian GP. The team announced additional upgrades that it will bring to Interlagos.

They will focus on the front and rear wing, along with some floor components. The idea is to unlock aerodynamic performance and refine the overall balance of the F1 car to strengthen its core performance.

McLaren is certainly thinking of the 2027 F1 season with an upgrade of this nature so late in the season. Its F1 reserve and 2027 WEC Hypercar driver, Leonardo Fornaroli, will get an FP1 chance in place of Oscar Piastri, as part of the FIA rookie rule.

“We’ve got some updates coming to the car across the front wing, rear wing and some floor components as part of our normal development cycle,” said Peter Prodromou, McLaren’s chief technical officer for aerodynamics. “The aim is to make up ground, improve our performance over the remaining races and build momentum into next year.

“São Paulo has been a good circuit for us in the past and is a fairly representative track, so we’re hopeful these upgrades can help us take another step towards the front. The season isn’t over yet: these upgrades are designed to improve the car now and help us in our fight for third in the championship.

“While the learning we take from these upgrades will feed into next year’s development, we also expect to carry over the concept of the new front wing into the launch specification of next year’s car,” said Prodromou. McLaren sits fourth in the constructors’ standings with 365 points to Red Bull’s 382.
