Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday inaugurated the Mumbai campus of the University of Western Australia (UWA). It is a significant milestone in the journey to build a future-ready industrial and research ecosystem in Maharashtra driven by world-class institutions, infrastructure and a talented workforce, he said.
“The UWA campus will provide fresh impetus to the Maharashtra government’s efforts to transform Mumbai into a global hub for knowledge, innovation, technology and talent,” said Fadnavis.
While Mumbai is already the nation’s financial, commercial, and entertainment capital, the State Government aims to transform it into a global hub for knowledge and innovation for future generations. To this end, new centres for education, healthcare (Medi-City), innovation and research and industrial development – along with a Global Capability Center ecosystem – are being established as part of the ‘Mumbai 3.0’ project currently under development near the city, he added.
The UWA has committed around AUD 80 million to establishing and operating its wholly-owned campuses in India. The Mumbai campus is the first of two UWA facilities in India, with the Chennai centre scheduled to open next month.
Located in Andheri (East), the Mumbai campus features modern, technology-enabled classrooms, project and innovation spaces, group-work areas, student hubs and collaboration facilities. Students will have opportunities for industry engagement through projects, internships, mentoring and networking, supported by career coaching and employer engagement, the UWA said.
Western Australia’s Premier Roger Cook described the inauguration of the UWA campus in Mumbai as a historic milestone in the relationship between Western Australia and India. He noted that Mumbai has been the focal point of Western Australia’s engagement with India for the past 30 years, fostering strong partnerships across education, research, technology, industry, and people-to-people ties.
The UWA Mumbai campus would open up new avenues for students in global education, research, industry collaboration, and international careers, while further strengthening the cooperation between India and Western Australia in the areas of knowledge, innovation, and skill development, he said.
