MUMBAI: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday criticised senior Supreme Court advocate and social activist Prashant Bhushan over his call for “regime change” in the country.
Reacting to Bhushan’s remarks at a press conference at the Press Club in New Delhi on Thursday, Fadnavis said they had exposed the real motives behind various protests and movements. The senior BJP leader alleged that attempts were being made to seize political power by provoking students and farmers, fomenting caste and linguistic animosity, and tarnishing the image of reputed institutions.
Fadnavis shared a video of Bhushan on the social media platform X, in which the latter reportedly spoke about the need for regime change. Reacting to the social activist’s statement, Fadnavis wrote, “It’s done bro, everything is exposed!! After all, it was all about ‘Regime Change’..”
He added in Hindi that the real political motive had finally come out in the public domain.
“Aakhir mann mein chhupi baat hothon par aa hi gayi! Saara khel satta ki kursi paane ka hai… phir uske liye vidyarthiyon, kisaanon ko uksaana hi kyun na pade, jaati aur bhaasha ke naam par dvesh phailaana pade, ya desh ki pratishthit sansthaon ki pratima malin karni pade.
Aandolan ki aad mein arajakta phailaana hi ‘inka’ uddeshya hai. (Finally, the hidden truth has come out! The whole game is about gaining power and securing the throne. And for that, they are willing to incite students and farmers, spread hatred in the name of caste and language, and even tarnish the reputation of the country’s prestigious institutions. Their sole objective is to create chaos under the guise of protests),” the senior BJP leader said.
Fadnavis’s remarks assume political significance amid serious allegations levelled by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) and opposition parties against constitutional institutions, including the Election Commission of India (ECI), the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
Later in the day, at a book release programme organised by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the chief minister spoke about the importance of the Constitution.
The programme featured the release of ‘Smart Nagrik – Nagrik Shastra Ani Sanvidhanik Mulye’, a booklet based on civics and constitutional values, and ‘Vidyarthi Prerana’, a booklet based on the life of Maha Manav and Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar.
Fadnavis said that as long as Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’s Constitution remained in force, decisions would be made by Parliament. He also made it clear that the regime could be changed only through elections in the country.
“This is India, not Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka or Nepal. They do not have the Constitution given to us by Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. As long as we have our Constitution, Parliament will make the decisions.
The Constitution possesses that much strength. Over the past several years, there have been repeated attempts to attack the Constitution and democracy. However, our Constitution is so strong that no one has been able to harm Indian democracy,” the chief minister said.
