Hyderabad:Nearly a decade after the fatal drunk-driving crash in Banjara Hills near the Punjagutta Burial ground in July, 2016, which claimed three lives, the victims’ family continues to wait for justice.
The dead included a nine-year-old Ramya. The mishap had left several others injured too. The trial would start on Thursday before the VII additional metropolitan sessions court in Hyderabad.
The accident occurred near Chutneys restaurant on Road No. 2, Banjara Hills. A speeding car allegedly driven under the influence of alcohol rammed into another car after hitting a road divider.
According to the FIR and chargesheet filed by the Banjara Hills police, three persons of the same family — P. Ramya, complainant P. Radhika’s nine-year old daughter, Radhika’s brother-in-law P. Rajesh and father-in-law Madhusudhana Chary — died in the crash, while several others were injured. Ramesh the younger-brother-in-law and Radhika too, who were in the car, suffered injuries.
Police booked the accused under Sections 304 Part II, 338 read with 109 IPC. The chargesheet stated that the accused and their friends had consumed liquor at a pub, TGI Friday Bar, before the accident occurred.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, victim Ramya’s father Venkata Ramana Pammi said the family spent nearly 10 years waiting for justice from court. “This coming July will mark exactly ten years. So many inspectors changed, two governments changed, but justice is still a dream,” he said.
Venkata Ramana said, “This is not only about our family’s loss. It is also about sending a message to society that people should not drink and drive recklessly.”
The next hearing in the case is scheduled for Thursday, dated May 8. Additionally, the records also indicate that one of the accused, identified as A2, K Vishnu Vineeth alias Vishnu, is absconding, while proceedings against the other accused Shravil continue before the sessions court.
Expressing frustration over the delay in tracing the absconding accused, he alleged that the family did not receive proper updates regarding the status of the Red Corner Notice process initiated by the cops against Vineeth.
Venkata Ramana said, “Whenever asked about the Red Corner Notice, we were being told that it is under process. I personally pursued it and approached the Regional Passport Office seeking details. I even got a response from the office which stated that Vineeth is currently in Houston. This was conveyed to the police, but they are not responding.”
“I want to ask, how Vineeth was allowed to go to a foreign land while is involved in a criminal case. Vineeth had been issued a non-bailable warrant.”
“All we want is justice,” asserted the grieving father.
