Fargo and Nigh Heat actor Scott Hylands has died, with his son, cinematographer Luke Hylands, sharing the sad news in a heartbreaking tribute.
Scott Hylands has died aged 83. The Canadian actor was known for performances in Night Heat, X Files and Fargo. His death was announced by his son, cinematographer Luke Hylands.
Breaking the devastating news on Instagram, Luke wrote: “Husband, Father, Actor, Director, Writer, Storyteller, Friend, and lover of life.I am heartbroken to share the news that my dad Scott has passed away Wednesday night. Myself and my family are still trying to process this horrible loss.
“There simply are not enough words I can say about you right now. You are my forever hero and my best friend. Always and forever. I love you. Goodbye Dad. Xo.”
Before making his screen debut, Scott performed on stage for a number of years. His breakthrough in front of the camera came in 1969 on Daddy’s Gone A-Hunting.
He then followed this up with appearances in films including Operation Snafu, Fools, Slipstream, Earthquake and Bittersweet Love. He featured on the small screen too. TV productions he was a part of included Griff, Kung Fu, The Magician, Wonder Woman, Police Story, The Waltons and Hart To Hart.
As his career grew, so did his reputation. In the ’80s, he was cast in the lead role of Detective Kevin “OB” O’Brien in the police drama Night Heat. He featured between 1985 and 1989 as the show ran for four seasons. It was the first Canadian original drama series that was simultaneously aired on an American television network during its original broadcast.
Following the cancellation of the show, Scott went on to work on shows such as To Catch A Killer, NYPD Blue, Titanic, The X-Files, Stargate SG-1, V and Supernatural.
In 2017 he played Ennis Stussy, the stepfather of Carrie Coon’s Department of Homeland Security agent Gloria Burgle, in the third season of Fargo.
Following the news of his death, his fans have shared tributes of their own online. On X, formerly know as Twitter, one user wrote: “So sad to learn Scott Hylands, Det. Kevin 0’Brien on Canadian TV’s epic Night Heat, died two days ago at 83.
“I was so happy to be acquainted with him in his twilight years & will always be glad I was in touch w. someone I cheered in the finest police series after Naked City.”
“RIP Scott Hylands,” another wrote as they also shared a crying face emoji. They uploaded a throwback image of the star alongside their sad words.
A third said: “Farewell to the splendid Scott Hylands, especially in COMPANY C, by Sidney J. Furie. Canadian actor, he was in all the TV series, from CANNON to FARGO, and in films like SHOCK and EARTHQUAKE, both by Mark Robson. Rest in peace.”
Scott is survived by wife Veronica, son Luke and daughter Rebecca.
